outfits, we are just going to talk a little bit about the Submariner itself.
Now what can you say about the Sub? It is classic. It is iconic. It is one of the
coolest watches ever designed. I mean, you've seen them on everyone from Sean
Connery as James Bond, to Steve McQueen, David Beckham, Fidel Castro. It's a very
popular watch, but its ubiquity does not take anything at all away from the Rolex
Submariner. Let's talk history real quick. Introduced
in 1953 as a result of a challenge to create a dive watch that was functional
but that would also work outside of the water with regular dress or evening
clothes. One of the things that makes the Submariner so iconic is that its design
really hasn't changed all that much over time. It is a tool watch with a
unidirectional rotating bezel. The first references were the 6204 and
the 6205. The reference that was made famous on-screen by James Bond in
1962 was the 6538. After that the 5512 was sort of where the watch's design
really became standardized. Then in 1969, of course, you had the first appearance
of the date window with the reference 1680. Now this is sort of the turning
point and where the Submariner really started to have a mass-market appeal.
After that you started to see lots of different flavors like all gold, two-tone,
different bezel colors rather than just the classic steel version with black
dial and bezel. The watch I'm going to be styling in this video is a reference
14060. 40 millimeter case size, which I feel wears much smaller
than the more modern 114060. Drilled lugs. No date window.
Super classic. Very versatile. Now there are so many different ways that you
could style a Submariner but for this video I'm only going to show you three
outfits. But they do range all the way from dressed up to casual. First up, we
have a business look. Now one of the most common questions I get about the
Submariner is can I wear it with a suit? Obviously, for me, the answer is yes.
Now because it's a sporty watch, it's not going to work in every situation. For
example, I would not wear it to a fancy dinner or other type of refined evening
event. Definitely never with a tuxedo. But for the day-to-day and with the right
kind of suit, I do think it works. Here I'm wearing it on the bracelet with a
hopsack navy suit, white French cuff shirt, brown patterned tie, double monk
strap shoes. I think it goes really well with hopsack because of the texture of
the fabric. It's got a more casual vibe to it even if you are wearing it in a
business context with a tie. Because the design of the Submariner is so simple
and minimalistic, I don't think it calls attention to itself or detracts from the
outfit at all. Next outfit is just a simple, no-nonsense business casual or
sharp casual look. Brown cotton blazer, denim shirt, cotton khaki trousers, and
some suede lace-ups. Now one of the things that can really help make the Sub
more versatile is if you swap out the bracelet for some type of different
strap. As you can see here, I have it on a brown leather strap. Changing your watch
strap is such a good way to give any watch a very different look and
exponentially increase its versatility. I love the Sub on a brown leather strap.
I think it really helps it pair with looks like this. I think a leather strap
kind of softens the watch a little bit and makes it part of the outfit rather
than standing out as it would on the metal bracelet. Finally, we have a super
casual look. Simple black leather bomber, black sweatshirt, my black Levi's 511s,
and Common Projects sneakers. This look is casual, a little edgy, rugged, so I swapped
out the leather strap from the last look for a gray NATO strap.
NATO straps are perfect for laid back casual looks like this. They come in
so many different colors. And the best part is that they are relatively
inexpensive, so easy to have a handful laying around to swap out for different
outfits. There you have it! Three ways to style a Rolex Submariner. Reminder that
