Good morning everyone and welcome back to my channel. This week I'm going to be filming a
daily vlog every day to share with you what my life is like as a PhD student who has four jobs,
including my PhD, and I'm hoping that you'll get a sense of what the work-life balance
is like in that kind of situation and I hope that you will enjoy these vlogs.
Today is Monday. I'd say this is the probably most working four jobs day. I will be working
for each of them somewhat evenly apart from YouTube I suppose there's the idea that I'm
going to be filming all day and I'll spend like an hour editing this vlog later but other than
that I'll be working for the other jobs pretty evenly. I hope I'll be able to film as much as
possible because the different jobs that I have are one my PhD, two I run a drama school or theatre
school in Dublin so that is a school with over 200 students, children, teenagers, adults and 10
staff members. A lot of that work I can't really film because it does involve children so I really
find it hard to share that in vlogs but I will probably get a couple of clips without children.
The third job then is lecturing so I work for Higher Education Institute lecturing in data
analytics and machine learning and then my fourth job is this YouTube work so yeah I hope that you
will get a good sense of what that looks like. This morning I am spending now from 7.15 until
about 10.15 when I have to leave for lecturing I will be spending on my PhD with a brief break
during that to have breakfast if I get hungry enough to have that. I'm hoping that today
I will be able to reformulate my data set chapter that I've written so far because I'm meeting my
supervisors tomorrow and I have to kind of have that ready for them. After finishing up work on
my data set chapter of my thesis and fixing up a little bit of my code then I did decide to have
breakfast so I had a bagel with avocado and eggs and of course my morning coffee which for me is
decaf to avoid anxiety and it still brings me a lot of joy every day. Then I headed out for my
lecturing hours I typically walk there and it takes about 40 minutes so that's just a good way for me
to get extra motion into the day, extra movement. I usually really enjoy this walk and there's
something about getting into the city centre which I've been able to do more with this new job
that I've just been really really loving. So I think like for your your group CA like it would
be good to have a chat and like see what you want to do in terms of the groups but you can put
together like a list of questions or like options for data sets that you think you might want to
work with and I'm happy to dedicate part of the time before Christmas because we only have two
weeks left to you guys presenting like a initial proposal of what you want to do for your project
and I can give feedback and say whether that would be appropriate or like you know do I
think it's a bit too easy for this assignment or a little bit too hard for the like level of the
class. If there's something you're quite interested in like it is kind of a finance course so like if
there's particular finance questions that you're interested in or like things in finance you want
to find out about I think it would be good to try and take a finance route for this one. Don't be
afraid to go for maybe a kind of complicated data set because that's what we're going to be doing
like on Thursday and next week is looking at more complicated data so looking at time series
so like stock market data isn't off limits and things where there's like maybe a lot of orders
from multiple people like you know so it doesn't have to be like that kind of thing where we have
like individual examples you could have like loads of Kiras ordering on Amazon like loads of products
you know it can be more complicated so I'd say don't shy away from like a more difficult seeming
data set. Then it was time to head for my work on my drama school so typically on a on a Monday I
will have a couple of private calls and admin work that I do in our office however today I was
covering for another teacher so I headed out to Dun Laoghaire which is where we have some of our classes
and I was working for those classes for about three hours and the age group of these classes
were three and a half to five and six to eight in two different classes. This week we were working
on their final Christmas poem for performing for their parents in the younger class and their
Christmas play in the older class which will be taking place next week. Just before the class at
about 3 p.m is when I get to have some lunch and catch up on some of the theatre school emails
so that's kind of totaling about three hours work for the theatre school. Then after the drama school
class is finished I headed off to my favourite thing which is yoga. I only do yoga once a week
at the moment and I'm hoping to up it to two times a week possibly I'll be doing that this week
and my Monday evening class honestly saves my life every single week. I feel like no matter what has
happened during the day I can just shake off any of those feelings in the old class. Today we had a
substitute teacher so big day for substitutes overall and man was it a killer. Usually the
Monday evening class is very chill and this one was not, very much was sweating. Then I walked home
so again that takes around 35 to 40 minutes and on the way I usually pick up some supplies for dinner
I will cook dinner for Tuesday and Wednesday evenings which is typically a lasagna. Good
evening everyone so I am home I have done the lasagna for the next couple of days so that'll
be dinner for me and Jack for Tuesday and Wednesday and I did all my washing up and all of that stuff
and now I am chilling out having some herbal tea as you can see. My Monday evening routine
has been something that I've really been enjoying the last couple of months that I've been doing it
I feel like it's something I look forward to every week and I'm somebody who I think like you know
the people say like you're not a not a morning person I am very much not an evening person
I really don't like the evening time I think I don't know what it is but it's probably just like
you know you get those feelings of anxiousness and stuff thinking about the day ahead or whatever
so I find I tend to fill up my evenings where I can with different things so Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday evenings I am teaching either in the drama school or lecturing and then Friday evening
is usually with Jack and I find when I'm with him I don't have that kind of same anxiety
and Saturday evening is usually also the same. Sunday evening is with my family then so that's
all good and then Monday evening at the moment is my free evening because Jack will be at work
and I could come home and you know feel all those feelings of stress but instead I've created this
really nice evening routine that I really really enjoy. Usually on a Monday evening I will first go
to counselling and then go to yoga but because I was covering the class out in Dun Laoghaire today
I did that for the afternoon and then went straight to yoga so I have my counselling
session later in the week which is fine but that also usually really helps to set me up well for
the week if I have you know anything that I'm feeling stressed about the counselling session
really helps to get rid of that and I usually find that I'm like hitting my daily activity so
easily. When it comes to maintaining work-life balance with so much other things on so working
four jobs today I've worked for all of those jobs three hours each for PhD work, lecturing and
the drama school and then an additional I guess one hour for YouTube for editing this video which
I will do now in a few minutes and also I guess just filming all day long. I still manage to
meet all of my exercise goals every day so like today I walked for I would say a total of maybe
two hours I'd say I spent walking maybe a little bit less I did an hour of yoga so that's three
hours of movement of my day saw my sister today because we went to yoga together I will spend time
with Jack in the morning usually like in between moments of PhD work there are opportunities to
spend a little bit of time with each other I managed to read some of my book today I'd say
I had two and a half proper meals like I take good care of myself and that allows me to keep going
that allows me to go into tomorrow with a full day working from 9am to 9pm which you will see
where I don't feel like I'm doing this it doesn't feel like I've been working all day long and I
haven't had any time for myself that is the buzzer going off for my food so I'll need to just take
that out of the oven now in a second but I think that is it for me like it's the it's the work-life
balance that allows you to get more like get balanced back into your day even if you have
everything going on I still feel like I had a great day even though I worked from 7am to 6pm
with the only real break being the hour it took me to get from my lecturing to the drama school
classes and like the half an hour less than that of lunch that I had there and I wouldn't say I
feel like that happened yeah so it was like three hours hour break three hours hour break three
hours stunning 10 out of 10 evening routine now I'll do an hour of editing this video which I
won't really feel because I'll be chilling drinking my tea watching Bones which is very for me like
I know people say like no screens in the evening and I would try not to but for me like Bones is
something I've seen like three or four times at this stage editing videos is very chill for me
and I don't get any kind of screen effects from my laptop um I would only really get it from my
phone so I try and stay away from my phone that is that is it for today hope you enjoyed the video
and I'll see you all in the next one
