Good Morrow, Liners...
On this episode I'm fishing Lake Ontario right outside of Downton Toronto with my close friend and top Ontario charter captain Greg Amiel. We're using down riggers, dipsy divers, and lead core line rigged with herring and spoons targeting Coho and Chinook Salmon. The bite was hot inshore early morning before we pushed out to the Blue Zone to find big Rainbow Trout. If you live in the GTA and haven't tried Lake Ontario salmon fishing, you're in for a real treat! DM Greg (info below) to book a trip.

all right today we're out on Lake
Ontario fishing with my boy Greg am he's
probably the top salmon captain in the
country for fresh water out here so
we're looking for shinook salmon coo
salmon and big rainbow trout right off
the island Toronto Island not a lot of
people know you can get those fish in
Lake Ontario they think that they're
only an ocean fish the big Sam and the
COO and Chinook but you can get them in
fresh water right out the city so if
you're ever looking to have some fun
please come out and try this it's
awesome we'll show you what we
[Music]
get I'll set
uh I'll set some of the riger and one of
the rigers
up can put you to work buddy yeah it's
time you can already tell the water
today is going to turn blue like the
Caribbean it's got that greenish tinge
to it already
wow what a
life so what we're setting up here right
now is what we call Liv scope or pan
Optics this one here is called the LVS
62 it's the deep water one I've got it
set up on a pole so I can angle it
anywhere I want we're going to be
watching the fish eat the lure today
live it's not cheating or anything it's
not so what are we seeing on these
graphs here below these are our track
lines right right now we've got track
lines I've been fishing this week we've
got contour lines all over on on our
mapping system uh we have a lot of
weight points I've caught fish over the
past 20 plus years you sure you've got
enough weight points cuz I don't see a
lot we're going to add a couple today
sure 60,000 what we've got here is
traditional sonar we're in 207 ft of
water and uh once we see some fish I'll
show you them on the screen we've got a
moon R moon setting right now and a sun
rising and a peak time so let's get some
lines
down
geted what we've got is a 15 lb
downrigger weight attached to our Cannon
down riggers we've got our release clips
we're going to be attaching our fishing
line to our release clip once a fish
hits it's going to release from the
release [ __ ] and we'll be fighting the
fish just on the rod alone these fish
live down pretty deep we can catch them
up to 200 plus ft deep so we need a
heavy weight to get them down where they
live now what we have on this one is a
Fishhawk probe our Fish Hawk tells us
our
speed and temperature down below very
important we target certain
temperatures where the salmon prefer to
eat lure of choices we're using some hot
spots with John King heads we're going
to be attaching a herring strip right
into the meat head
one of their preferred baits at this
time of the
year so why do those look neon
green well Adam's good thing you asked
so what these are are Herring strips I
cut them myself from a whole whole
Herring these Herring do come from
BC we cut them into a semi-triangular
shape they are brinded they've got a UV
Dy in them they're salted that way the
meat becomes a lot firmer so what we do
is we take our bait
head some people call it a helmet for
your Herring strip attach it
in we Peg it with a
toothpick adjust the hook just below the
strip and that's ready to roll
down she goes
[Music]
[Music]
spe
[Music]
top goes
in it's
wedged oh we got one already first one
G pop it
out there is loed it out it's like a
little Shaker
[Music]
King shakers just basically mean a
smaller fish you'll see why in a
minute get them up
[Music]
cleer that's just the baby shinook
salmon we do get them over well over 30
lb in this lake lake records 46 lb nice
thing about seeing smaller fish like
this is the future
generation couple years these fish will
be 25 to 30 lb they're fast growing it's
a beautiful little guy
so that fish would be less than a year
old right now next year he'll be 10 lb
or 12 lb the year after 20 plus the year
after that 30 plus okay
buddy we'll get
bigger Little Hook right
here that was the fish coming up to our
line this little patch here this green
patch that's a bait ball
they're pretty
definitive so we're going to set up a
Dipsy
diver some people call it a p Poor Man's
down riger easy way to get
down to achieve the depth we
need on this one we're probably going to
put a fly on it give them a little bit
of a buffet presentation and then we can
refine our bite once the they let us
know which what they prefer the meat the
spoons or the
Flies so what we've got here is a spin
doctor behind the spin doctor we are
going
to we have a crinkle green Atomic fly
put that
down now what the flashers do like a
spin doctor hotpots king fisher they
rotate through the water and drives the
salmon attracts the salmon and they eat
the fly or the meat behind you can see
our live view this is our down one of
our downrigger balls right yep so that's
the one coming up right now we just got
bit on that's the one we have down below
that's our flasher rotating you can
actually see it rotating and that's our
meat right behind what would that is
that a fish there uh that might be the
thermac climb the thermac
climb so gear is getting pretty Advanced
I don't know what's next you're going to
be able to pick and choose what fish
bites aren't we that good already that
that's how we do
it seriously you're going to start
rejecting
fish you might hurt the fish's
feelings so we're attaching the Dipsy
diver now this Rod's really special it's
a mono Rod uh sorry a wire Rod uh as
opposed to our mono down rer
Rod now this will achieve an extra 8 ft
per 100 we let
out creates a hum in the water drives
the fish crazy that's our lure down
below that's a big salmon following into
it hopefully he's going to eat right now
come on come on baby
[Music]
it see I like the mystery of fishing
unlike Greg I like sitting there waiting
for the line to pop never knowing when
the strike's going to
happen Greg likes to see it all he likes
to
watch never played a video game but
that's my video game I got my joystick
right here I can adjust it any way I
want there's another one Adam good fish
good
fish there we go he popped it got him I
got him oh yeah he's taking line he's
taking
line tight tight tight
yeah all right so we're doing go hit it
hit it hit it hit it hit
it oh yeah there we go up here
that feels like a nice
C oh yeah
buddy you can see the Flasher coming
through the water the king is right
behind him look at that look at that
dancing on
[Music]
the salmon
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
out here we're the only catching fish
out here September 1st baby all right
I'm going to start walking back got them
we go
Adam wanted your coo we got a
nice what a nice size coo beautiful
that's a healthy
fish can just look at
it these are very powerful fish that is
a good size coo now you can see oh
yeah that's what
nine oh yeah 9 10B coo we nickname these
fish footballs on the
lake cuz they're round like a football
kind of like a tuna see the beak here
the gray gum line and there's no spots
on the tail distinctive of a
COO it's one of the top three ways to
tell she is really feisty so it's going
in the box
now yeah you got it you got it you got
it got her there she is nice oh yeah
that's a good one taking line hear
that be swimming towards the boat
swimming towards the boat
[Music]
we got
him another Co another Co
oh chunky coo chunky
coo another nice one same thing
distinctive
features beak gray gums no spots on the
tail this one's a little bit bigger than
the last one it's a little
rounder but these are really healthy
fish in the early fall this one's nice
and girthy
[Music]
reset the
[Music]
Dipsy we're going to take off our
flight going to put out another
meat that's a frog catter with a Hot
Fish lure Hot Fish Head all in frog with
chrome go
[Music]
down so this is a little Shaker shinook
salmon we got on the Dipsy shinook this
size are great to eat cuz the meat is
nice and furm
the bigger they get they get kind of
mushy so this one's perfect for two
people two nice fillets look at that
beautiful pattern on
him you can see him from the top
down his back looks almost like a
mackerel with the teal green in the
spots
all right let get him in the
Box nice little mixed bag today on
Leo 8:30 in the morning had five strikes
already three stuck on usually the bite
dies down after early morning and then
what would you say picks up again sort
of around 9:30 10 yep usually the next
bite time or around 9:30 10 just like us
we have our breakfast then we have our
lunch or we have a snack so they take a
break and then they go back on The Chew
[Music]
[Music]
grab it at
him get out of there he's got it all
right yeah that's a better one finally
the bite looks like it's going our way
oh yeah nice head shakes nice head
shakes that feels like a nice shnook
okay all right oh yeah he woke up now
no I'm trying to keep the line tight but
we're not going to put too much drag on
him we broke the hook off last time
doing that these Chinooks have vicious
head shakes when they find out they get
hooked when they find out that they're
hooked it's game
on I'm using a technique called pumping
on this fish where we reel down the
slack and then pump up some more
distance trying to inch him towards the
boat oh
[Music]
yeah oh
yeah there we go the Dipsy in
view oh yeah nice head shakes right here
at the surface I got color there bu you
got color I got
color we got a long lead
so oh
yeah got him it's a
king there he
is
yeah nice job Adam
here we go
oh Lake Ontario shuck
[Music]
baby what a
fish got
him what a
fish look at that beautiful sh know Exon
early fall Lake o you can see this one
it's not as dark as the fish that are
already in the rivers that have gone up
to spawn but it's getting
there what a beautiful
salmon you can see the Speckles on the
tail not a beak like a COO and not a
great gum line look at the teeth
beautiful if you can see the teeth in
the sun on this side what a predatory
fish in fresh water in a big City's
backyard you don't have to go to the
ocean to find these kind of
[Music]
fish but you do have to go really early
in the morning and it's not fantastic
wow that's a good what
14
yeah
[Music]
woo Beautiful live well now let's talk
about the limits for a minute on these
fish on lakeo so you're allowed to have
two lines per person on the Great Lakes
right two lines per person obviously on
a valid Ontario Fishing License you're
allowed five
salmon two rainbow tro okay so you can
do three lake trout two rainbow trout
out of the shinuk or Coos you're allowed
five on the lake with a full license if
you have a sport uh conservation license
then you're only allowed two instead of
the the five so we've got our sport so
we're well within our limit I think any
other bigger fish we're going to let go
unless we got a nice little Rainbow but
we've got a little shnook a big one and
two coost
so we've got a good mixed bag for dinner
[Music]
