Day 6 of observing the little family of Malaysian Pied Fantails.
The Malaysian Pied Fantail’s First Flight

I was startled to see that only one chick was left in the nest—had something happened? The remaining chick looked lonely. The parent birds were still bringing insects to feed it, though not as frequently as before.

Later, I noticed the parent birds lingering on a nearby tree. It was only when I heard the chick's calls that I realized—the other chick had already fledged and was now on that tree. The parents had to divide their attention, feeding the newly fledged chick as well. The fledgling seemed full of curiosity about its surroundings. Though it couldn’t fly far yet, it looked happy.

The chick still in the nest seemed more timid. I observed the parent birds trying to coax it out with food, waiting just outside the nest. The chick would stand at the edge, hesitating. Even when the parents tried to nudge it out, it would retreat back into the nest once they left. But the look of longing in its eyes as it watched its parents fly to the other chick—it seems like it’ll be ready to follow soon.

From hatching to leaving the nest takes only about two weeks. The growth of these little birds is truly astonishingly fast.
