Grieg was quite a talented pianist in his own right, and it is not an exaggeration to say that to say that many of his works, even the orchestral ones, were originally conceived for piano. Some of Grieg's piano works focus on lyrical miniatures or increasingly on transcriptions of folk songs and dances, in which Grieg seems to have anticipated the folk song world of the Hungarian Bartók. The sheer number of peasant and folk dances and tunes can be overwhelming, but Grieg's finest collection of shorter pieces appears under the title Lyric Pieces, 66 short works written between 1867 and 1901, divided into 10 books. The pieces are usually short and fairly simple. It may well be that their charm lies in their very simplicity.
