"Today, the opus is known by its popular nickname Goldberg Variations, which goes back to a report by the first Bach biographer Johann Nikolaus Forkel. As mentioned at the beginning, Bach wrote the work for his patron Count Hermann Carl von Keyserlingk in Dresden, who suffered from insomnia. To help him pass the time on sleepless nights, Keyserlingk had wished for a few pieces ‘of such a gentle and somewhat cheerful character’.

His house harpsichordist, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg (1727-1756), who was still a young Bach pupil at the time, was to play them for him. As thanks for the completed work, Bach received a royal reward: ‘a golden cup filled with one hundred louisd'or’, the highest fee he was ever allowed to receive for one of his works.
The reward was commensurate with the rank of the variations: Bach turned the Curonian count's rather unassuming request for ‘somewhat cheerful’ harpsichord pieces into a monumental cycle of variations in 30 parts - the most important ‘piano variations’ before Beethoven's Diabelli Variations."
