In April 2013, Mazda discontinued its last mass-produced rotary-engined model, the Mazda RX-8, citing difficulties in complying with the latest emissions regulations for the European market, such as Euro 5. Until then, the rotary engine had been Mazda's flagship engine technology, and the company had been steadily improving it. A rotary engine is an internal combustion engine that uses a mechanism for generating power devised by German engineer Fritz Wacker and NSU in the mid-1950s.
