As German Expressionism used a pair of 'anxious eyes' to observe the social
changes of the later 19th and early 20th centuries, there was a painter in Northern Europe at the same time who used a pair of 'tranquil eyes' to convey the sufferings of that era. His paintings have the style of traditional realism and naturalism, infused with a spirit of expressionism.
