Adorable sea otters grooming #animals #seaotters
Sea otters are obsessed with keeping their bodies clean and, when they're not eating or sleeping, they're constantly grooming themselves for a number of important reasons: sea otters have the thickest fur in the animal kingdom. This thick fur is their main form of insulation against cold water, unlike other marine mammals, which have a layer of fat to keep warm. To prevent heat loss from the otter's body, the outer layer of fur, also known as guard hairs, keeps cold water completely away from the skin. Not only does the fur keep the water away, it also traps the air that helps the otter float.
Although perfectly at home on land, otters prefer to dive into the depths of the sea. In fact, it can go six minutes without taking in air and can swim at speeds of up to 30km/h.
Otters build their dens near rivers, almost always with two entrances, one terrestrial and the other aquatic; this system makes them a highly intelligent species, as it enables them to escape predators.
These animals have only one partner in their whole life. They are affectionate and constantly show affection to each other. When they sleep on land, they usually sleep in each other's arms to care for each other. When they sleep in the water, they hold hands or feet so as not to be separated from their family group and swept away by the sea current.
This species is known for taking very good care of its young. With females in estrus all year round, families can number over 20 members. Mothers teach their young to swim during the first month of life. The mother's womb will be the pup's home for the first few months of life.
They are considered one of the most intelligent animals on the planet, and the only ones capable of making their own cooking utensils. They are experts at opening shells with stones.
They have a strong sense of loyalty and are capable of giving their lives to defend their territory and their own.
When they reach adulthood, their fur turns white, like human gray hair.
