The capybara, the world's largest rodent, resembles a giant guinea pig.
The gestation period lasts from 120 to 150 days. The female has litters of 2 to 8 young. Weighing 1.5 kg at birth, they are strong enough to walk immediately and nibble plants. However, they will drink their mother's milk for 15 or 16 weeks, until they are weaned.
The mother is not the only one to look after her young, as all the females in the group get involved.
