Mygales aren't very friendly animals for most people, but this particular species could well change that. Typhochlaena seladonia is nicknamed the “Brazilian Jewel” by terrarium enthusiasts. Indeed, with its iridescent back and beetle-blue legs covered in fine silk, it is surely the most precious of tarantulas. What's more, it's a dwarf species, measuring just a handful of centimetres: females don't exceed 6 centimetres, and males 4 centimetres.
But it's not just its appearance that makes it interesting, its lifestyle is just as interesting. This species is arboreal and, like other species of tarantula, digs a “door burrow” to hide and surprise its prey. Except that Typhochlaena seladonia burrows into the bark of a dead tree trunk, from which it catches the flying insects it feeds on. It is one of the few species of tarantula to do this, digging its burrow in the bark rather than in the ground.
