The 1870 "Musikalisches Conversations-Lexikon" describes Ludwig van Beethoven as a physically robust but slightly disheveled figure, with a round, healthily colored face, framed by unkempt, dark hair and intense, almost piercing eyes. This demeanor hinted at a spirited and strong-willed character, though his eyes also expressed a benign and occasionally distracted nature. As Beethoven's deafness intensified, his physical bearing became more cautious and his movements, always brisk and uncoordinated, seemed to reflect a heightened attentiveness. Beneath his rough exterior lay a heart of profound sensitivity, deeply touched by the natural world and human connection, which inspired some of his most celebrated compositions. Beethoven found solace in nature, frequently walking alone in the countryside to think, dream, and compose, away from domestic disturbances and the unreliability of household servants.
Additionally, the encyclopaedia details Beethoven’s early life and musical training, describing his father as a demanding, yet insignificant figure in his musical development, and his mother as overly indulgent. His strict upbringing, contrasted with his mother's leniency, fostered a certain unsociability and disregard for societal expectations in Beethoven. His musical education under various teachers, including Pfeiffer and Neefe, equipped him with a solid foundation in piano and composition, leading him to produce his first acknowledged works by the age of twelve, although he later disavowed these early pieces.
This multifaceted portrayal underscores both Beethoven's personal struggles and the depth of his artistic genius, which culminated in masterpieces like the "Pathétique" Sonata, composed between 1798 and 1799.
The little river and flowers were captured on film by Christian and Simone Schlegel in Switzerland. The video was edited by Wenjing Ma.
