Lu Gong was a native of Pingling County in the Eastern Han Dynasty. From a young age, he diligently studied the Five Classics, the Book of Songs, and other texts. His accomplishments, along with his mastery in ritual propriety had earned him widespread acclaim. Sympathizing with Lu’s family's poverty, the county official ordered his subordinate to gift Lu grain and wine every year. Lu always declined. Admiring Lu's character, the county official intended to reserve Lu an official position as Lu was still too young, but Lu also refused.
