Pièces de viole were collections of suites for bass viol and usually continuo written by several French Baroque composers, most notably Marin Marais, whose five Livres form a core of the viol repertoire. This particular book was first published in 1686 (viola part) and 1689 (continuo part). It was dedicated to Monsieur de Lully.
Marin Marais was a famous French viola da gamba virtuoso and composer. Born on 31 March 1656, he was first a choirboy at the Saint-Chapelle and as such received lessons on the viola da gamba from Hottemann and later from Saint-Colombe, with whom he reached the highest level of virtuosity in six months!
The sky was a deep royal blue and the clouds ranged dramatically from white to dark grey. They are reflected here in the Burgseeli, the small castle lake at Goldswil near Ringgenberg, Switzerland. The idyllic Burgseeli lies in a nature reserve, in a kind of hollow in front of a rocky ridge, the so-called "Burg" (Burg German for: stonghold or fortress). The video was shot by Simone Schlegel and edited by Wenjing Ma.
