The viol or viola da gamba is a bowed, fretted and stringed instrument with a hollow wooden body. The frets of the viol are usually made of gut and are tied on the fingerboard around the neck. Viols were introduced in Spain in the late 15th century, seeing their height of popularity in the Renaissance and Baroque periods from 1600 to 1750. Bass viols resemble cellos, but viols feature flat (not curved) backs, sloped (not rounded) shoulders, c holes (not f holes), and five to seven (not 4) strings. Viols are played upright and are positioned between the legs like a cello, which explains why the Italian name is 'viola da gamba', meaning 'viol for the leg'.

Known as a gambist, or Viola da Gamba player, Jakob Rattinger is one of the world's premier players of the viol.
