A high-speed pursuit ended in Compton after the suspect ran into an AMPM gas station.
We're going to take you back to the end of that pursuit we were showing you just minutes
ago, and it ended right here in Compton on Surface Streets at this A.M.P.M. market.
There were two people in that vehicle, and police say they have detained one of them.
The other suspect might be inside that store, but look to the left there.
People with their hands up, many of them came out of that store.
It looked like it might be employees, as police are not sure who the suspect is.
So for everybody's safety, their safety, they're keeping everybody away from the store.
As you see, law enforcement gathered right in front there to see if the suspect is inside.
Yeah, so basically, sometimes in these situations, as a precaution, you sort of treat everybody
as a potential suspect, and keep them separated, keep them with their hands up, and try to
get your bearings and get a sense of the situation.
It was interesting, when we were watching that pursuit, it didn't seem like there were
any law enforcement vehicles all that close to the suspect, and here, just an overwhelming
show of force we are seeing from law enforcement vehicles.
I imagine many of them, sheriff's deputies based out of Compton, were not all that far
from a Randy's Donuts there, which we saw just basically across the street there, where
this A.M.P.M. is.
And ARCO, if you're familiar with the area, this is Alondra Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue
in Compton.
So for the moment, you've got a situation where they're trying to figure out, is this
suspect really inside?
Is this suspect one of the folks that's standing over there?
Or is there a barricade situation inside?
You don't get the impression, Christine, as we often look at body language, of an all-clear.
This looks like this situation is not yet an all-clear.
Also, I don't see great concern of the people to the left there, and you see their hands
are down.
There's a lot of law enforcement gathered around them.
We did see what looked to be employees coming out of the store as well.
One person in a wheelchair was a customer.
Why there is so much law enforcement there with the sheriff's department?
This pursuit started in Compton.
We picked it up on the 710 freeway where that driver was going at speeds of over 100 miles
per hour, way passing cars there on the freeway.
That driver must have gotten off the freeway, circled back around to surface streets here,
ending up here by this A.M.P.M., reminding you one of the people in the car, one person,
was caught.
And a reminder as well that the original call on this was that they believed that the driver
was armed and dangerous, which might be the reason for this overwhelming show of force.
If the cops believe that this person has a gun and may shoot them or shoot somebody in
the store or shoot themselves or take somebody hostage, you know, they're not going to take
any chances with their own lives.
You see, maybe that'd be a shield or something that they may be preparing to walk in to that
store with.
They're going to be very careful in the way that they go about the next few moments with
all of this.
We've got some video of this pursuit in case you're just joining us.
You can see the desperation from this driver just flying down the freeway in the middle
of rush hour on a Friday, significantly faster than everybody else on the road.
When we sort of lost the car, we believe that the car was ditched somewhere, probably near
this A.M.P.M.
Two people got out of the car.
One of them apprehended the other person potentially in this A.M.P.M.
But we have not seen anybody come out in handcuffs, and it looks like law enforcement is getting
in place to potentially make their move and get a better sense of what's going on inside
that store.
Interesting to watch the body language of the officers there, obviously standing outside
of the store for their own protection and safety, wondering what intel they have from
inside, whether the clerks there or the other customers were able to give an idea as to
where the suspect went in that store.
Perhaps they're locked in a bathroom, who knows.
But you had customers there getting gas, so law enforcement had to clear that area.
I'm thinking I see some vehicles still there, perhaps stuck there where people can't leave.
Right.
And you also wonder, you know, what kind of intel they have in terms of what firepower
this company looks at.
Now they're sending a dog in.
They also have the option, if they want to wait, in waiting for a sort of SWAT team or
people that may have more specialized equipment or more heavy-duty protective equipment to
protect the officers who may have to go in and make a move if indeed the suspect may
have a gun or may be pointing a gun at them, threatening to shoot them.
You know, for law enforcement, they've got time on their side.
They can wait this person out.
They can, you know, do everything that they need to do to ensure that they, their folks,
get to go home at night and to try to protect the public.
We don't know at this point if there is anybody else left in that A.M.P.M., if somebody may
be held as a hostage at this point or if it's just the suspect by themselves.
Or it's possible that the suspect has already left, too.
We don't know for sure if the suspect, if they know that the suspect is in there.
So let's talk now with our police expert, Dennis Zine.
Dennis, you're watching this, I guess, standoff if there is indeed a suspect inside that store.
As you look at the body language there of the deputies who are now going in, they're
moving in now, going in, and they don't look like they're alarmed, what's your take here
as you see this?
Well, what they need to do now is search the A.M.P.M., thoroughly search every part of
that A.M.P.M. to determine if that suspect is in there.
And they'll go in with the protective equipment.
They'll have weapons with them.
And they'll be sufficient deputies as we see surrounding that A.M.P.M. and the folks
on the other side of the building that are standing there, possible suspects, they need
to sort this out.
But they'll search everything they can in that A.M.P.M. to find out if the other suspect,
if the suspect, and I guess there's two suspects, is hiding out inside.
So they'll look throughout that entire facility and find out and determine whether it's clear
or not.
If it's clear and the individual's outside, they can't identify them being involved in
the pursuit, then they'll go to Code 4 and return to patrol.
They have a number of units.
So they probably called in units from adjoining areas of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department
because they don't deploy that many units on a watch.
So that's a tremendous amount of personnel that's there, uniformed personnel from the
L.A. County Sheriff's Department for this particular suspect.
And as we saw by the driving, the driving was absolutely outrageous, 100 plus miles
an hour on a freeway with other vehicles.
And now we see a sheriff's helicopter overhead, but it'll be the ground search they determine.
And if they can't find a suspect, then they'll do a Code 4 and go clear.
So Dennis, I'm just watching the body language here.
They went in with a K-9 partner and they went in with several officers and there's no commotion
outside right now.
There's nobody standing, you know, at alert there, so to speak.
I'm almost wondering, is there a suspect who is in custody, who is down there inside that
store, do you think?
Well, apparently there were two suspects, a driver, passenger, and apparently they have
one suspect.
So they're obviously searching for the second.
So they're basically looking for not anyone other than a suspect in this particular case.
And if they have that information and looking for someone, someone could be concealed in
there.
Oftentimes when they hide, they'll hide in the root, in the attic, they'll hide any place
they can find.
And that's what they're looking for.
They'll search that thoroughly with the K-9.
And if there's a suspect in there hiding, which could be the case, many times they seek
refuge in a facility, whether it's a residence or a business, and there's a lot of places
they can hide in there.
But they have sufficient deputies, as we see, by the air unit showing the number of vehicles
that are there.
I'm sure there's plainclothes officers, detectives, et cetera, that responded to the situation.
Yeah, you wonder if that vehicle with the doors open may be the suspect's vehicle there.
We're getting some sort of, some intel in Fox 11 that there may be a second suspect
who is, and now we see this person go in custody, which would be a major development, meaning,
and that they're trying to now just clear out this AMPM as a precaution and make sure
that everybody's safe and that maybe there isn't somebody else connected to all of this.
Correct, they want to make sure that they arrest the suspect and that all civilians
are safe and secure.
And again, the suspect's up to you wanted for more than the GTA because you've got a
tremendous amount of personnel on this particular search, a tremendous amount of folks that
are there.
All right, Dennis, stand by.
We're going to take a break and give an update when we come back and hope that all is ending
well here after this pursuit.
