Police chase ends in crash, injuring several in West Springfield

We're continuing our coverage now on this morning's police chase and crash which led to the arrest of a suspect in West Springfield. 22 News reporter Christina Demores joins us live in studio tonight. And Christina, multiple people were injured in this incident. That's right. And we are still waiting on word of the extent of their injuries. We also obtained footage that captures the moments before that serious car crash. A police chase in West Springfield Wednesday morning left multiple people injured. It started when Holio police tried to stop a suspect on Route 5 following reports of a stolen firearm. Police say the suspect refused to comply, hitting a cruiser before speeding away. But what happened next is shocking. A 22 News viewer sent this video showing the suspect driving the wrong way on Route 5. And seconds later, he crashes head-on into an oncoming vehicle, leaving wreckage behind. Right behind me is where that head-on collision happened. And it's an incident that is just unimaginable for drivers. >> I would never want that to happen. It's uh not a safe environment being on the highway anymore. >> Police say 37year-old Carlos Maldonado of Springfield ran from the crash but was later captured. Three officers as well as Maldonado and the other driver were all taken to the hospital. Maldonado was arrested with two existing arrest warrants for drug trafficking and illegal firearm charges. A stolen firearm was recovered from his vehicle after the incident. Riverdale Street has since reopened, but police say the investigation continues. We will provide updates on those who were injured on Aaron online at wwlp.com. Working for you tonight, Christina Morris, TW News.
