I-95 is back open tonight in one man in police custody after a police chase gave
way to a fire on the highway. Chopper 6 overhead as firefighters doused that
Audi convertible there. Nearly a dozen police cruisers blocking all southbound
lanes. The traffic here at Fishtown. The driver of that car police say was wanted
in connection with several felony charges and was fleeing from officers
as they tried to make an arrest. Action News reporter Elizabeth Worthington live
at that scene tonight Elizabeth. This caused a huge traffic mess today. Oh yeah
Brian and it's still going on. They've been gradually reopening lane by lane
but there's still lane restrictions in place and that means there's still a
major backup here on I-95. This vehicle is wanted for multiple retail thefts. Video from a
penned out camera shows the heavy smoke coming from a vehicle on I-95 south near
Girard Avenue. Police sources tell Action News that car fire was the end result of
a police chase that began on Allegheny Avenue in Kensington just before two
o'clock this afternoon. We're told the driver was wanted for multiple felonies,
reportedly retail thefts and that he clipped a civilian vehicle during the
chase. The driver got on I-95 south at some point and ended up crashing his car
and it caught on fire. The driver was taken into custody. Chopper 6 was over
the scene showing the aftermath. A charred vehicle and a line of cars that
stretched on for miles. A stretch of I-95 was shut down but has
since partially reopened. Lane restrictions caused a lengthy delay for
drivers. And again at least one lane is still closed here on 95 south near the
Girard Avenue exit and again that driver was taken into custody and fortunately
nobody was hurt as a result of this incident. We're live in Fishtown tonight.
Elizabeth Worthington, Channel 6 Action News. Brian? Yes, still causing a mess
hours later. Elizabeth, thank you.
