Comedian Ali Siddiq talks about how he got his start, his year-long comedy tour, and his family.
Everything that you've ever heard about being locked up comes to your mind
right then. Everything you've ever heard. I'm sitting in that car cuz it's small.
It's small. It's not even built for people to be back there. I'm a little
dude. I'm 5'7". If you anything past 5'8", your feet, you just in there. I don't
know. It's a big piece of plexiglass. They just...
Welcome back. That was a clever. Our next guest from his comedy special, The
Domino Effect 3, first day of school. His series that has racked up over 16
million views. That's a lot of views there and he's been doing stand-up
comedy for more than 25 years and he's currently on his nationwide tour. I got
a story to tell and he's telling us all about it. Please welcome Ali Siddiqui.
Good to see you, man. Oh, man. Thank you for having me. Good to be here. Yes, yes. So, congratulations
first, but tell us how you got here. I mean, you've had some highs and some
lows. I got here by staying consistent with what I wanted to do. I got out of
prison in 1997. I went straight to a comedy club, just joking, Comedy Cafe.
This is in Houston, right? In Houston and got booed first time. It was a booed
atmosphere. That's what it was called. It was the Apollo night and I got booed the
first time. I didn't say anything. I just walked up. I learned to read audiences by
that first time because I had on the suit because that's all I saw was comics
and suits. I go up. Everybody got on sneakers and jeans and things. I'm like, I
go up and they boo me just because I had on a suit. They're like, who is the old man?
Boo! All I said was, hey. And they booed the jacket off me. And I kept going back and
then I became the host of that place two months later. Wow. And then I was there
for three years and I left and went on my own. Look at where you are now. Still
striving, still trying to make it and jumped on this tour. Outback asked me to
do a tour and I said, yes, 100 cities. And I said, OK. And it's different. It's a
different game, man. Clubs and theaters are so different. It's like playing high
school ball and then somehow, all of a sudden, you're in the NBA the next day.
It's a faster game. Your tour itself, I know that some of your comedy and your
standup involves talking about your kids. And like me, I have a very different life
than my older brothers. And I think that you your sons have a similar story. Is
that true? True. So the show that I'm doing tonight at the Beacon is a part of
my new special called My Two Sons that I'm shooting after in Dallas. It's my 30
year old son and then my 13 year old son. Totally different lifestyles, totally
different things. One grew up in the hood, one grew up in a very gated
community and they talk different. Everything's about them different. But
they both my sons.
They're in different generations. All right. Thank you very much. We
appreciate it. And the best of luck to you. And for more information on his
tour, make sure to check out his Web site and you can catch his specials
Domino Effect one and two. It's out on YouTube. Good to have you. Thank you
all for having me.
Yeah.
