The so-called air independent engine means that in addition to the fuel tank, an oxidizer tank is set up to store hydrogen peroxide liquid, and the original oxygen from the air is changed to the preparation of oxygen.However, the practical use of hydrogen peroxide liquid has only just started because it is too unsafe, and this so-called independence is also based on the premise of carrying the oxidant.The dawn of a truly air-independent engine came in the 1930s, when Fermi published his paper on nuclear fission in 1934.In 1941, Columbia University built the first reactor under his direction, and in 1942, the reactor at the University of Chicago realized the first chain reaction.
在兩次世界大戰中，潛艇投入戰爭發揮了至關重要的作用，但是水下航行時所用的是蓄電池電動推進方式，電池容量有限，如果蓄電池能量耗盡以後，潛艇必須浮出水面進行充電，這大大降低了潛艇的隱蔽性，使潛艇成爲只是一種能潛水的軍艦。而且由於電力推進航速較低，嚴重削弱了潛艇作戰能力的發揮。
1925年德國人搞出了一款“不依賴空氣”的發動機，所謂的不依賴空氣就是除了油箱，再設置一個氧化劑箱，儲存過氧化氫液體，把原來從空氣中吸取氧氣變成了自己準備氧氣。然而由於過氧化氫液體安全性過低，實用化僅僅開了個頭就結束了，更何況，這種所謂的不依賴也是建立在自行攜帶氧化劑的前提下。真正的不依賴空氣發動機的曙光出現在30年代，1934年費米發表了關於核裂變的論文。1941年美國哥倫比亞大學在他的指導下建設了第一座反應堆，1942年芝加哥大學的反應堆第一次實現了鏈式反應。
