The purchase of 12 MH-60R Sea Hawk anti-submarine helicopters from the United States, which had been expected, has been suspended, the Defense Minister confirmed on May 5, 2022, while attending the Legislative Yuan's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.This is the second recent abortive arms purchase by Taiwan authorities.Taiwan's Legislative Yuan disclosed not long ago that it received a notice from the US State Department that the M109A6 self-propelled artillery arms sales have been suspended.It was part of the first Taiwan arms sale announced by Biden in August.At the request of the United States, the entire $750 million arms sale is to be withdrawn.Even the portable Stinger missiles are at risk of delayed delivery due to changes in the international situation and the impact of the russia-Ukraine war.
The US government, which has always been willing to "arm Taiwan", has recently become less enthusiastic about arms sales to Taiwan.The Taiwan authorities explained that they cancelled the purchase because the price was too high and the delivery was too late, not because the US stopped the purchase, but because of the Taiwan authorities' own decision.However, this does not seem to be the case. Some sources say that the United States considered the Seahawk anti-submarine helicopter does not meet Taiwan's needs, so it rejected the deal on the grounds that it does not meet the principle of asymmetric warfare.
臺灣國防部長於2022年5月5日在出席立法院外交及國防委員會時證實，原本預計向美國採購12架MH-60R海鷹反潛直升機的採購案已喊停。這也是近期臺當局手中夭折的第二起軍購案。臺“立法院”不久前透露，接到美國國務院通知，M109A6自行火炮軍售已被叫停。這是拜登上任後於去年8月宣佈的第一項對臺軍售案裏的項目。在美方要求下，這個價值7.5億美元的軍售案全案擬撤銷。就連便攜式“毒刺”導彈也因爲國際情勢變化，受俄烏戰事影響，會有延遲交運風險。
向來不吝“武裝臺灣”的美國政府，爲何最近對臺軍售不甚熱心了？臺當局解釋稱，取消軍購是因爲價格太高，交付太晚，不是因爲美國喊停，而是臺當局自己的決定。不過事實似乎並非如此，有消息稱是美國認爲“海鷹”反潛直升機不符合臺灣的需要，因此以“不符合不對稱戰力”原則爲由拒絕這筆交易。
