Yamamoto's plane was shot down, and a generation of Japanese naval heroes fell.

山本五十六是二戰時期日本的海軍大將，二戰時期任日本海軍聯合艦隊司令長官，山本五十六的一生可以用四個字來評價，那就是“嗜賭成性”。而他豪賭的賭注，竟然是自己的性命和日本的國運。他一生中最大也是最出名的賭博就是偷襲珍珠港，日本海軍以非常小的代價重創了美國太平洋艦隊。不過，雖然珍珠港事件他賭贏了，但卻也預示了他的末日即將來臨。
1943年4月，美軍通過破獲情報得知，日本海軍聯合艦隊司令山本五十六即將乘坐飛機前往前線視察。經過周密的計劃後，4月18日，當山本五十六等人乘坐的戰機羣出現在預定空域時，美軍的P-38“閃電”戰鬥機對其進行了截擊作戰。這場空戰中，12架P-38“閃電”戰鬥機負責引開護航的“零”式戰鬥機，另外4架“閃電”對山本乘坐的“一”式陸基轟炸機展開攻擊，山本的座機被擊落，日本一代海軍名將就此隕落。
