When it comes to delta wing fighters, the most famous are miG 21 and Mirage 2000, while the earliest practical delta wing fighters are the F102 series developed by Conwell Corporation of the United States.
In 1949, the United States Air Force put forward the demand for the development of a new high-altitude high speed interceptor. In June 1950, it issued a tender and received design proposals from six companies, two of which received design numbers: XF102 from Cornwell and XF103 from Republic.Among them, XF103 program is quite bold, with a maximum speed of more than 3 times the speed of sound and a practical ceiling of 24,000 meters. This program is far beyond the technical level of the sonic age that just broke through, and is doomed to failure.
Conville's first XF102 was powered by a J40 engine, followed by a J67.According to calculations, the maximum speed can reach 1.8 times the speed of sound with the J40 and 1.9 times the speed of sound with the J67.In order to speed up the process, the Air Force decided to skip the prototype phase and go directly to the pre-production version for low-speed production. Since the proposed J67 engine and MA1 fire control system could not meet the schedule, the F102, MA1, and J67 were first equipped with existing equipment for future improvements.
When it was found during test flights that the J40 could not propel the F102 to the desired performance, especially speed, the Air Force decided to replace it with the more thrust J57 engine.The Air Force ordered 42 F-102s twice in 1952.
After several modifications, the first F102A was received by norAD's interceptor squadron on 1 May 1956, and all orders for the F102A were delivered in 1958.
提起三角翼戰鬥機，最著名的莫過於米格21和幻影2000，然而最早的實用三角翼戰鬥機卻是美國康維爾公司發展的F102系列。
1949年美國空軍提出研製新型高空高速截擊機的需求，1950年6月發佈招標，共收到6家公司的設計方案，其中兩家公司的方案獲得了設計編號：康維爾的XF102，共和的XF103。其中XF103方案相當大膽，設計最大速度超過3倍音速，實用升限24000米，這個方案遠遠超過了那個剛剛突破音速年代的技術水準，註定了失敗的命運。
康維爾的第一架XF102使用J40發動機，後續機使用J67。根據計算，使用J40時最大速度即可達到1.8倍音速，換裝J67後可以達到1.9倍音速。空軍爲了加快進度，決定跳過原型機階段，直接以預生產型進行低速生產，由於設想的J67發動機和MA1火控系統的進度跟不上，先用已有設備裝備F102，MA1和J67用於日後的改進工作。
由於在試飛中發現J40無法推動F102達到預想的性能，尤其是速度，空軍決定換裝推力更大的J57發動機。1952年空軍兩次訂購了共42架F102。
經過多次改進，1956年5月1日，防空司令部的截擊機中隊才接收了第一批F102A，所有的F102A訂單于1958年完成交付。
