"Mendelsohn's artistic significance, although he was brought up in a strict school that eschewed all romantic dreams, is nevertheless mainly due to his relationship to Romanticism, as mentioned, he was introduced to its magic by Carl Maria von Weber in particular. This master's youth coincided with the flowering of that school of poetry, which dreamed up its own world with fantastic arbitrariness, usually in direct contradiction to the world of reality, but which unfolded in marvellous splendour. This, however, provided music with entirely suitable objects for its depictions; after all, music has the most appropriate means for its artistic realisation. No other art is able to depict the magical chiaroscuro in which figures and groups of this romantically constructed world are shrouded, the hovering between waking and dreaming, than music. Carl Maria von Weber was the first to grasp this side of Romanticism, bringing it to life not only in his operas but also in numerous instrumental works. Mendelsohn joined this trend with the greatest success, and it produced a number of the most significant works of art in him, because he looked at them even more clearly and, with the mastery of form he had attained, made them more vivid in the work of art. He had trained his imagination and his sensibility, as well as his technique, on the highest and best patterns of the great masters, on Bach and Haendel, Mozart and Beethoven, and when he then subjected both to the influence of Romanticism, this produced early and perfect works of art in him."
