In our country, the recorder is the instrument that is taught in almost all schools in the lower grades. And most of the childern stop playing the recorder long before the instrument can show its marvellous qualities. Many turn to other instruments if they continue to take music lessons. As you can hear very clearly in this piece, you do the recorder a great injustice if you call this instrument a "children's instrument" or "for beginners", or to be more precise, you even insult it. The recorder is much more than what we learnt in class at school. I also went from the flute (in wood in C) to the alto flute (also made of wood) and soon to the transverse flute (only mouthpiece and surface in silver), which I thought had a more beautiful sound than the wooden flutes. It was probably also a kind of competition in our class as to who chose the better instruments, as we all had to learn at least one other instrument. I had to wait until Christmas for my grandparents to give me a transverse flute bought in a specialist shop in London as a Christmas present. According to my music teacher at the time, it has an exceptionally beautiful sound for a beginner's flute. I practised on the instrument every day for many years, partly because my mother wanted me to, but partly because I enjoyed the compositions of the classical masters so much that I was happy to do so. A few years later, when it came to giving me a flute in gold as a present, I turned down my grandparents' extremely generous offer. Although my grandparents had not attached any conditions to the offered gift, I knew that I did not want to attend the conservatory because I was not aiming for a musical career. Besides, I loved and still love my transverse flute (made in Japan) more than anything else. But back to the wooden flute.

When I listen to this wonderful piece by Händel, I feel a little wistful, because until not so long ago I didn't realise what a wonderful instrument the wooden flute is on which I learnt to read sheet music.

Maybe I should get my flutes out again and play, maybe some Handel or Bach? Yes, maybe I will...
