J.S. Bach was the director of the Leipzig Collegium Musicum for seven of his 27 years in Leipzig - in addition to his work as cantor at St Thomas' Church. This organisation consisted of professional musicians and students from the University of Leipzig who performed vocal and instrumental music at a professional level. Johann Telemann founded the Collegium Musicum in 1704 while a law student at the university. By Bach's time, the Collegium Musicum had become an important part of the city's musical life, giving a weekly public concert as well as special performances for dignitaries. Bach conducted the Collegium from 1729 to 1736.

The Violin Concerto in A minor resembles a dialogue between the first violin and the other instruments. The violin speaks, waits for answers and is answered in the same noble voice in which the question was asked.
