Most of Bach's concertos are thought to have been written between 1717 and 1723, when he was Kapellmeister at the princely court of Anhalt-Cöthen, leading a small group of very accomplished musicians. When Bach went to Leipzig in 1723 to become cantor of St Thomas' Church, his professional and private life changed. Cöthen, a Calvinist institution, had no use for elaborate church music and Bach had focussed on composing for orchestra. In Leipzig, Bach was entrusted with the music for three churches and had little need to write concertos and little opportunity to perform them. On the other hand, three of his sons were now in education and old enough to venture into serious works. In 1723, Wilhelm Friedemann was 13 years old, Carl Philipp Emanuel nine and Johann Gottfried Bernhard eight. There were also daughters who, although not destined for musical careers, undoubtedly enjoyed a musical education (Bach's second wife, Anna Magdalena, was a professional singer). In addition to a house full of children, Bach also owned a house full of harpsichords (he left seven of them when he died) and enough string instruments to equip a small orchestra, so it made sense to rework his Cöthen concertos for harpsichord and strings.
