"Of primary importance in these harpsichord-violin works is their departure from the conventional design of sonatas for a solo instrument with basso continuo- that is, with accompaniment of the violin to a single harpsichord, but also assigned the harpsichord a new partnership function by having it join the violin in the treble register, in addition to having it present the bass line. This essentially provided the sonatas with a basic trio structure-and, in fact, handed the lead role to the harpsichord, which is appropriately reflected in the formulation of the title."
