Johann Sebastian Bach was a master of composition. Here you can hear the Cello Suite no. 3 in C, BWV 1009 - 1st Prelude. Let's have a look at what a prelude is:

"Prélude, Präludium, Voluntary, Vorspiel; is the name given to the piece of music of indefinite form which introduces larger forms of more fixed constuction. It has been shown in the article Overture that this emerged from the prelude. This first appears as an intrata, which, usually resting only on the tonic triad, introduced festive movements and later the first scene of the opera. With the more independent development of insturmental music, this intrata then expanded into a sonata and overture, but was also developed into a prelude as an independent movement, especially on the clacichord and organ, with which the suite or fugue and fantasia were introduced. These preludes differ from the above-mentioned improvisations, which serve more external purposes, in that they are more elaborate and arranged according to certain artistic aspects. They do not actually convey a specific content, but merely prepare it. Their form is therefore free in so far as it is by no means fixed, not even in its outline. As a rule, the prelude lacks rhythmic melody; it is achieved by resolving an organically developed series of chords into motivically developed figures. This is how the master piano preludes by Johann Sebastian Bach, Clementi, Mendelssohn and Chopin are composed and this approach corresponds to the idea of perfect form."
