The 1918 Puccini one-act opera "Gianni Schicchi" is one of the most frequently performed opera of the past century.

The opera Gianni Schicchi had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera on 14 December 1918, under the baton of Roberto Moranzoni, as the final part of Il trittico. The sold-out house "received Gianni Schicchi with uproarious delight", in the words of the New-York Tribune critic. In the Evening Sun, W.J. Henderson called the work "one of the most enchanting pieces ever placed on the Met stage". Lauretta's aria 'O mio babbino caro', which was repeated at the insistence of the audience despite a public announcement forbidding encores, was undoubtedly the "pearl of the evening".

O mio babbino caro' translates as 'Oh, my dear papa' and is sung by Lauretta as she begs her father, Gianni Schicchi, to help her marry the love of her life, Rinuccio.

This comic opera in one act was written in 1917-18 and is based on the libretto of Forzano. The libretto is based on an incident that is mentioned in the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri.
