Previously, metal fabrication and development was too expensive for carpenters in Japan. So instead of using nails, carpenters known as “miyadaiku” have developed unique methods of interlocking pieces of wood, similar to a giant 3D puzzle. Takahiro Matsumoto has been a carpenter in Miyadaiku for more than 40 years. He operates his company in Kamakura, Japan, where he assesses and repairs damage caused by many ancient temples in his city. Using ancient techniques, he ensured that these spiritual structures would last for generations to come.
