Flight 522 of the Helios Airways
Flight 522 of the Helios Airways, often referred to as a ghost flight, was a tragic event that shocked the world in 2005.
On August 14, 2005, a Boeing 737-300 from Lanarka, Cyprus, with the destination Prague, Czech Republic, took off.
On board were mostly in a good mood vacationers who were on their way home, as well as commuters who wanted to get off at the stop in Athens.
But none of these people should reach their destination.
Shortly after takeoff in Lanarka, problems with the cabin pressure control appeared.
There was an acute lack of oxygen on board and despite several warning signals and the falling of the oxygen masks in the cabin, the pilots did not react appropriately.
The situation escalated when the flight captains and a large part of the passengers became unconscious.
Without a driver, the Boeing circled over Athens and became an invaluable threat to millions of people in the Greek capital.
Two Greek F-16 fighter jets were sent to check the plane.
They reported that the captain's seat was unoccupied and the co-pilot was unconscious above the steering horn.
Finally, a flight attendant reacted via radio, who happened to have a pilot's license for small aircraft.
The brave man took over the cockpit, although he had never steered an aircraft of this size before.
The man could not save the flight, but he managed to steer the plane from Athens into an uninhabited area, and there the plane crashed near the village of Grammatico.
The hero and all 121 other inmates came to life.
The investigations revealed that a maintenance error, in which a switch for the cabin pressure control was not set correctly, led to the tragic accident.
The case of a 16-year-old boy.
A fierce argument with his parents led a 16-year-old boy to escape to the United States.
He hid in the chassis of a jumbo jet to fly from California to Hawaii.
After the landing, the boy was unconscious, and the employees who had discovered the boy were in shock.
The escapee survived his adventure, fortunately despite severe hypothermia and severe burns.
He admitted to the police that he had unnoticedly obtained access to the airport area via a fence at the San Jose International Airport.
He climbed into the chassis of an aircraft and survived the more than five-hour flight despite extremely low temperatures and lack of oxygen.
According to the US Flight Authority FAA, the chances of surviving such a flight in the chassis of an aircraft are only just under 24%.
The accident was not only dramatic due to the boy's fate.
The flight also triggered a debate about the safety precautions at airports.
Despite the massive investments in safety after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the boy was able to overcome the security barriers without any problems.
British South American Airways flew Stardust.
The Stardust aircraft is one of the most mysterious chapters in the history of aviation.
The passenger aircraft of the type Avro 691 Lancastrian III of the British South American Airways
took off on August 2, 1947 with the aircraft license plate G-AGWH for a flight that was supposed to go down in aviation history.
During the flight over the Argentine Andes, the aircraft crashed into a snowstorm and was unfortunately unable to be cleared for decades.
What further strengthened the mystery of the crash was a last radio message of the aircraft.
Shortly before the planned arrival in Santiago de Chile, the radio operator of the aircraft sent the message
ETA Santiago 1745 HRS Stendek.
The word Stendek was repeated three times, but no one knew what it meant.
There was a lot of speculation about the meaning of the word, but no definitive explanation.
The tragedy of the Stardust was intensified by the fact that despite intensive search,
neither the wreck of the aircraft nor the remains of the passengers and the crew were found.
Only many years later, some wreckage and human remains appeared in the Andes.
The remains of the aircraft were thus explained, but the mystery of the cause of the crash continued to exist.
The case of D.B. Cooper
D.B. Cooper's kidnapping of a Boeing 727-051 is one of the most fascinating and unsolved mysteries in the criminal history of the United States.
On November 24, 1971, a man, who called himself Dan Cooper, kidnapped a Boeing of the Northwest Orient Airlines.
During the flight from Portland to Seattle, he handed a note to a stewardess saying,
I have a bomb in my briefcase.
He demanded 200,000 U.S. dollars and four parachutes.
After landing in Seattle, he released all passengers against the demanded ransom money and the parachutes.
With a minimal crew on board, Cooper gave detailed instructions for the flight.
Low altitude, slow speed and the landing gear should remain unloaded.
He opened the tailgate of the plane over the mountainous terrain of the U.S. state of Washington
and jumped into the darkness with a parachute and the ransom money.
Despite intensive search, Cooper was never found.
A few years later, weathered banknotes were discovered on the shore of the Columbia River, which belonged to the ransom money.
To this day, the identity of D.B. Cooper and his fate after the jump is a mystery.
Did Cooper not survive the jump or did the man only lose the banknotes during the jump?
Some profilers of the FBI even claimed that the conned criminal may have only scattered some notes
so that one could get the idea that he did not survive the jump.
A body was never found, but that would not be unusual in the area.
Numerous wild animals in the area could have dragged a dead body and scattered it in all directions.
The case fascinated the public so much that it led to numerous books, films and TV shows.
The FBI officially closed the case in 2016, but the mystery of D.B. Cooper remains unsolved
and still a subject of speculation and theories.
In the cold times of the Cold War, when the world was overshadowed by the constant threat of a nuclear conflict,
an aircraft from a military base in Florida took off to Morocco.
On board were two capsules of nuclear materials, which were invaluable for the production of nuclear weapons.
During an air refueling over the Mediterranean, ground control lost contact with the aircraft.
It disappeared without a trace, without any indication of its whereabouts.
The fact that such a dangerous and at the same time coveted material was on board made the situation even more alarming.
There were numerous speculations that the aircraft may have been intercepted by another country,
by terrorists or a foreign intelligence service that was interested in the nuclear material.
The search for the aircraft became an international affair,
where several countries used all their resources to solve the mystery.
Despite intensive efforts, the fate of the aircraft and its dangerous cargo remained a secret.
To this day, no one knows where the aircraft or the nuclear capsules are.
The case of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370
This case shook the earth in 2014.
On the fate of the 239 people on board, observers all over the world took part.
On March 8, 2014, Flight 370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing took off.
The radio contact broke off over a mountain.
Allegedly, a pilot in India had discovered the aircraft shortly afterwards on his radar.
If this is true, the Boeing 777-200ER would have lost a lot of its course.
The aircraft remained missing.
Despite one of the most extensive search operations in the history of aviation,
the wreck of the aircraft was never found.
It is very likely that the aircraft, in which mainly Asians, families, businessmen and some travelers sat,
disappeared in a region that is known for its geographical and climatic challenges.
The dense jungle could have simply swallowed the MH370.
However, had the Indian air traffic controller really seen the Boeing of the Malaysian Airways for a few moments,
it would be much more likely that the flight had crashed over the sea.
Strangely enough, none of the passengers sent a message to loved ones on the ground.
In the emergency and in the awareness of the possible imminent death,
passengers actually turn on their cell phones and send messages to family members.
The flight must have ended quickly or a sudden drop in pressure had led to the unconsciousness of the people.
After years of investigations, the entire case resembled the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle,
where numerous aircraft and ships have mysteriously disappeared in the course of decades.
Although there is no direct connection between MH370 and the Bermuda Triangle,
both cases are examples of inexplicable secrets that occur again and again in the world of aviation.
The case of the Egypt Air Flight 990
On October 31, 1999, a Boeing 767-300ER from Los Angeles took off with the destination Cairo.
An intermediate stop in New York City was planned.
The intermediate stop went according to plan, but the flight was never to arrive in Egypt.
About 360 kilometers east of New York, the plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean,
killing all 217 people on board.
No one knows why there were no radio messages and no signs of problems until today.
It was almost as if the plane had fallen from the sky.
The miracle stewardess
Airplane accidents are usually dramatic and shocking.
Many people die in one fell swoop, and crashing machines can cause great devastation on the ground.
But there are also miracles in these tragedies, which are just as shocking as the deaths.
On January 26, 1972, a DC-9 of the Yugoslavian airline JAT landed in Denmark
and crashed shortly after near the Czechoslovak village of Srpska Kamenice.
A part of the cabin ceiling had come loose and most of the passengers were thrown out of the plane.
But as if by a miracle, one person survived the crash.
All other 28 passengers died.
Flight attendant Vesna Vulović was incredibly lucky.
First, she jammed between the plane wall and a service car.
A circumstance that prevented her from being sucked out of the plane immediately after the accident.
When the plane crashed, Vesna fell from a height of about 10,000 meters to the ground.
Again, it was pure luck that the woman survived.
She fell on a mountain slope covered with dense and thick grass
and was accidentally discovered by a man who was hunting her in the mountains.
Vesna survived despite severe injuries.
Her survival became a world record and made her internationally known.
Her survival was often referred to as a miracle and she became a national heroine in Yugoslavia.
Later, it turned out that the crash was caused by a bomb explosion on board.
Croatian separatists had smuggled an explosive on board.
