【Classical music and nature Claude Debussy: Arabesque No. 1. Andantino con moto (L.66 Number 1). This beautiful piece was played by Simone Renzi. It has Creative Commons license and is provided through www.musopen.org.
Claude Achille Debussy composed "Arabesque No. 1" in 1888 when he was about 26 years old. It is one of his best-known piano pieces and is characterised by its elegant, flowing style, which is typical of Debussy's musical language. Through the two delicate arabesques, Debussy's own tonality is masterfully displayed. The uniqueness of Debussy's sound-suggestion and sound-magic is revealed here.
("Music is a mysterious mathematics, whose elements participate in the infinite.")
In "Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, Allgemeine Enzyklopädie der Musik Band 3, 1954, it is stated that Debussy did not attend public school and was given the necessary knowledge by his mother and Madame Roustan in his youth. "The early youthful life without lively educational stimuli and in mental seclusion, without schoolmates of the same age, did not remain without influence on the individuality of the person and artist. Chopin's pupil Madame Mauté de Fleurville discovered the boy's talent and taught him to play the piano until he was admitted to the conservatoire in 1873. ... Debussy's lively and extraordinary spirit, which was by no means content with being limited to the musical metier, strove during these years to perfect his education....
In the last years of his life, a cancer of the intestine caused the master to waste away. Shocking outcries, especially in his letters to R. Godet, give an idea of the emotional drama that took place in the struggle for creativity. But genuine Debussyian irony still tried to disguise the situation and agony:
"Music has left me completely. If there is no reason to weep over it, it is at least somewhat ridiculous. If the music finds itself ill-served by me, let it turn elsewhere: If need be, I will give it some useful, if not pleasant, addresses!" (October 1917 to Godet.)
The flowing grass, captured by Christian Schlegel, goes very well with the elegant, flowing style of Debussy's music in this arabesque chosen by Wenjing Ma, our video editor. Don't you think so?
