Many artists and musicians have put a lot of emphasis on virtue, and Brahms was no exception. It was more important for him to go his own way more righteously than to stay in that German art party. (I suppose the public pressure to remain must have been considerable.) After reading this, I feel encouraged to go my own way and renounce things that are not sincere or virtuous, and to pay more attention to traditional forms and customs.
