Tannhäuser is one of the more human heroes among all the characters created by Wagner. On the one hand, he cannot really renounce his carnality, although he strives for spirituality and divine forgiveness. Wagner has described that his "inclination to sensual impetuosity" conflicts with the "seriousness of artistic feeling".

The video recordings were made from the ruins of Neu-Falkenstein Castle, one of the former castles on the municipal territory of Balsthal in the canton of Solothurn. It stands on the eastern ridge north of St. Wolfgang an der Klus to Mümliswil in Switzerland. It was bitterly cold and an icy wind was blowing.
