Tannhauser's full title is Tannhauser and the Singers' War at Wartburg. It is an opera in three acts from 1845 with music and text by Richard Wagner (WWV 70 in the composer's catalogue of works). It is based on two German legends: Tannhäuser, the mythologised medieval German minstrel and poet, and the story of the Wartburg Song Contest. The story centers on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love - a theme that runs through most of Wagner's work.
The "Grand March" from "Tannhäuser" opera is a powerful and grand composition that embodies the heroic and triumphant spirit of the story.
