Today's cook Chicken Wonton Soup 雞餛飩湯! https://www.facebook.com/cicili Wontons look a lot like dumplings, and of course both have a specially prepared filling sealed inside a flour-based wrapper. In ancient times wontons actually looked just like dumplings, but from the Tang Dynasty they became distinguished by two different names and their own characteristics. A wonton wrapper is a square shape, while a dumpling wrapper is round. Wonton wrappers are also thinner than dumpling wrappers. The stuffing in wontons can be minced chicken, pork, shrimp, or vegetables.
According to legend, during the Han Dynasty groups from a nomadic tribe called Xiongnu always harassed the northern frontier and its people. Within the tribe, two brutal leaders were infamous, one named Hun, and the other named Tun, which sounds like the word wonton in Mandarin, huntun.
So people made wontons out of these villains—they minced their meat, wrapped them in wrappers, cooked them and ate them up. What a smart and voodoo way to treat the villains! But truly if this legend is true, I think the people back then were just really helpless, and wished to have their peaceful lives back. Ok, that was a fun journey back to the Han Dynasty, and now let's cook our chicken wonton soup! Hi everyone, this is CC. Today, let's learn to make wonton.
And in Chinese, we call it wen dun. So when you make wonton, you can make a lot at the same time.
You can cook partially, put the rest in your freezer for the next time.
And when it comes to cooking them, you can boil them, you can fry them, you can steam them.
And for today, let's make wonton soup.
And here are the ingredients for wonton, chicken wonton soup you have.
We have here minced chicken, about 8 oz.
We have some chicken broth for the soup later.
And there's egg yolk, the whole egg.
About 12 wonton sheets.
And we have minced Chinese mushroom.
And this is cilantro.
And here we have carrots, scallion, a little bit of salt, sugar, cornstarch water, soy sauce,
white pepper, and this is sesame oil.
So here I have the minced chicken inside a big bowl.
And then we're going to add some salt in here.
And then we're just going to mix everything really well together.
So I'm using 4 chopsticks here, as you see.
But you can also use a spoon or a fork.
Now we're going to add sugar, soy sauce,
and then this is just a pinch of white pepper.
This is sesame oil, just a dash.
And here, this is cornstarch water.
And now we're also adding the whole egg.
So I'm going to use my 4 magic chopsticks.
I'm going to add the minced carrots, about just 1 tablespoon or 2 tablespoons.
This is minced Chinese mushroom, also about 2 tablespoons.
And this is the stem of cilantro, about 1 tablespoon.
Now you can see that I'm just going in a circular motion
to let everything blend nicely together.
And I think this is ready.
Put one wonton sheet in the center of my bowl.
Scoop about 1 teaspoon of filling into the center like this.
And here I have some water, just put it on the side.
We're going to dip our finger inside this water
and then just try to brush it onto the edge.
And then we're going to do this and then seal everything.
Next, we're just going to fold it like this.
And then we're going to use some water and then seal it one more time.
Okay, so there we have one wonton.
Let's do some more.
Put it in the center.
Use your finger, brush some water into the edge of the wonton and then seal it.
Okay, so here I have my wontons ready right here.
And I'm just gonna put this in a boiling hot soup or chicken broth.
We are going to boil it for about 3 minutes, 3 to 5 minutes.
You know that I will also put this recipe down in the box below.
