Who does not like firework? I like firework, a lot. Not the loud, banging ones, but the showers of stars exploding in all colors. So I was all the more surprised to find this during my research in Wikipedia:

"Handel omitted the string instruments against his will. The story goes as follows: During the preparations, Handel and the Duke of Montagu, the Master-General of the Ordnance and in charge of the royal fireworks, argued about the addition of violins. The Duke made it clear to Handel that King George preferred only martial instruments (winds and percussion) and hoped that there would be "no fiddles". (I am so glad that "the fiddles" are now included).

Also against Handel's wishes, a full rehearsal of the music took place in Vauxhall Gardens rather than Green Park. On 21 April 1749, over twelve thousand people, each paying two shillings and sixpence (half a crown), thronged there, causing a three-hour traffic jam of carriages on London Bridge, the only access road to the area south of the river. (hm... 3h! traffic jam in 1749 :-) )

Six days later, on 27 April, the musicians performed in a purpose-built structure designed by Servandoni, a theatre designer, with the help of four Italians. The fireworks themselves were designed and controlled by Gaetano Ruggieri and Giuseppe Sarti, both from Bologna. Charles Frederick was the controller, Captain Thomas Desaguliers was the chief firemaster.

The performance was not as successful as the music itself: The rainy weather caused many misfires, and in the middle of the demonstration the right pavilion caught fire. In addition, a woman's clothes were set on fire by a stray rocket, and other fireworks burned two soldiers and blinded a third. Another soldier had his hand blown off during an earlier rehearsal for the 101 cannons that were used during the event." - Wikipedia

The moral of the story: enjoy the music, and if you use real fireworks, pay close attention to your own safety and the safety of others. No dress or pavilion should be barnd, nor should anyone be blinded or burned! Take care of everybody around you!

The pictures were taken by Christian Schlegel in spring 2023 in Switzerland with a Fujifilm X-H2S. The film was edited by Wenjing Ma.
