Settle Station Water Tower is the only survivor of eight watering places for steam locomotives on the Settle-Carlisle railway. In 2011, the water tower was bought by former Bradford police officer Mark and his wife, Pat.
This 19th-century tower used to store water at a sufficient height above the railway and in a volume large enough to fill the tenders of thirsty steam engines. The building was last used in the 1940s. Mark wants to bring this Grade II listed building into the 21st century and add a glass rooftop extension. They spent 18 months restoring the old water tower at Settle Railway Station.
The couple is keen to retain the original features of the building and ensures that modern additions such as a prefabricated roof room have minimal impact and do not eclipse the tower itself. For example, the staircase is painted sky blue to match St Pancras Station, and the finials are reconditioned ceramic tops from old telegraph poles. The water tank's 72 panels have been restored to their original colors of Denby Pottery cream, Venetian red, and Brunswick green—a job taken on by Mark himself to keep costs down.
The majority of the project, however, was carried out by local craftsmen, with Settle builders Richard Kilburn and Carl Johnson as the principal contractors. Settle Station Water Tower is now a popular historical destination for tourists.
