While we were researching this trip one of the first things we found that we
wanted to try that we'd never even heard of before is scrapple. Scrapple is pork
trimmings and scrap mixed with cornmeal and flour created into a loaf sliced and
then pan-fried. Sounds delicious. East Shore Diner was closed. We came to this
city for this reason. It was a 50s style diner that serves scrapple. Turns out
there's a West Shore Diner. I called and they serve scrapple so we're heading
that way.
this was $3. This is the scrapple.
Kind of looks and reminds me of Spam. Pennsylvania version of Spam. Let's try
it. Oh it's nice and crispy on the outside. That's pretty good. It's really
crispy on the outside. A little mushy on the inside. Nice and salty. Got a nice
little pork meaty flavor. Not bad. Could use some hot sauce maybe. It's more of a
texture thing. It's very mushy. Like very shredded. It's not bad. It's salty. Tastes
like hot salty pork but it's also very mushy. So it's almost like you chewed it
up in your mouth spit it back in and fried it. That's what it tastes like. Here you go.
I'm looking at these fried eggs. When it comes to culinary excellence you're
supposed to not have any kind of fried ground bits on the fried egg. Kind of
sounds weird and these are perfectly fried when it comes to that standard. I'm
very impressed with this fried egg. It's delicious. Still has the runny yolk.
Beautiful. The total was $21 change. Don't judge a book by its cover. Might not look
that great but this was excellent. This was a great diner. Classic. I don't think
they changed anything in 50 years and that's the way it should be.
Coolest small town, not even small town, but just the coolest hole-in-the-wall
diner I've ever been to.
Just left West Shore Diner. We are now driving three hours to Shenandoah
National Park. The plan is to sleep as close to the park as we possibly can so
that tomorrow we can wake up and fully explore the entire place.
Driving through this part of the country you will see plenty of signs for Civil
War monuments, parks, and battlefields. I recommend going to all of them. I don't
know if you noticed but I'm a huge history buff. I love all kinds of history,
US, and the world. So our one pick for a Civil War site is Harper's Ferry. It's in
West Virginia. We wanted to have a stop in West Virginia because the mountain
and drives are beautiful. Harper's Ferry is very well known for John Brown's raid.
John Brown led a raid with former slaves on an armory and took it over. He
only held the armory for a day or two and at the end he was the first American
tried for treason in the US. His raid brought national attention to an
uprising to the end of slavery. A year later southern states started to secede
and the war started. This little town was the beginning of it all.
There were several original armories and you can see that right now there is just
the old foundations. They were set fire through several times by several
different people.
One of the other cool things that I like about these historical towns is the old
stonework and the foundations that are still there. They're just pieced together
and patched up best they could and they're still there two, three hundred
years later.
We're gonna do a little grocery shopping for dinner and a celebration tomorrow.
know how we're gonna get out of here tomorrow. We have no service which is fun
good thing. I should probably like screenshot how I got here. If anybody can't find us we're at Little
Fort campground in the middle I don't know what are we in Virginia? George
