Hey, this is Dirt Farmer Jay from DirtFarmerJay.com.
I've got a quick tip for you today on common cordage, tubes, that sort of thing, the way to stow them.
Now, if you're in the building trades, a common thing is putting in air compressor hose and trying to coil that up.
If you're in the landscape trades and you're using water hose, for instance,
if you're a musician, I dabble around, I'm a functional guitarist, and here I have an electric guitar cord.
You go to coil these up.
A most common way that people will go to coil up, let's say, an air hose or one of these,
is to start with the end like this and then turn it and roll it.
If you're watching my hands in slow motion, you have to roll the cord.
You can see it on the text.
See the sides of the item there?
I have to roll it to come around.
Let's speed it up.
You can see I'm just rolling it every time.
Well, doing that, I'm introducing a spiral.
That is now a spiral.
It's not a roll because I didn't roll it onto an object this way.
I had to corkscrew it into shape this way.
So now you're going to make use of this.
If you're going to go play the gig or you've got this thing rolled up as an air compressor hose,
your compressor's around the corner, your air needle's in the hand here,
and you're going to trim out a door, and you go out to use this thing.
Well, because there's coil in it, look what you get.
See here? There's all of that.
So to get it to straighten out, I've got to sit here and unroll this and take out all that.
Otherwise, I get this.
See it there, all the twist trying to come out of that?
All right. Now, how do you eliminate that?
Look at this. This is actually a great point.
All of that right there, to get it undone, I have to untwist it.
So how do you get rid of this?
It's really simple.
You need to eliminate the twist or counteract it.
You go ahead and start the same.
Start with one roll.
Go around just like that.
But on the next one, watch.
Here's the magic.
Go the opposite way with the twist.
See how I did that?
There's the loop.
Go ahead and loop it to the right.
Loop it to the left, but tuck it in behind.
Notice I'm going up behind, not in front.
On this one, it's in the front.
On this one, it's behind, then in the front.
So what I have now, it appears almost the same.
Looks like, okay, I just have this coil.
But I have neutralized each right turn with a left turn.
But here's the difference.
Proof is in the pudding.
Watch this.
When I go to throw this out, look at that.
No twist in the cork.
I lied.
There's a little one at the very end.
But you'd have to grieve me.
That's manageable.
