Hi, it's Pat Pattison with the Best Los Angeles Award.
I'm here at the Plastic Bag Store, 661 Imperial Place.
It's here for another week.
It's incredible.
Put on by UCLA, come check it out.
Let's take a look.
And I'm here with Kevin, who's actually Nick,
a grocery clerk, and Kevin, Nick,
what the heck's going on here?
So this is called the Plastic Bag Store.
It was created by the artist Robin Froehart back in 2017.
And in collaboration with her and Palm Arts,
we were able to bring it out here to the West Coast
after its premiere in Australia.
Then we brought it over here
and they created a couple of special pieces for us
where not only is it completely out of plastic,
but it's also themed for us,
such as the seafood section and the flower section.
Wow, and so everything here
is made out of one-use plastic bags.
Unbelievable, and it just shows you how much waste
in terms of plastic.
I mean, the idea obviously was ecological.
Correct, yeah.
Robin is originally from New York
and she actually found all this plastic
on the streets of New York and in the ocean.
So there's actually, the plastic bottles,
as she said, is the most disgusting thing she'd ever done
because they were all sticky and stained.
And so she spent a long time just scrubbing them all
so they look like they originally were.
But all of it is reclaimed and recycled plastic.
And how long is this show here?
This show had been running for a week.
It runs for another week till the 11th.
We have three shows a day
and we have four shows on the weekend.
And tell me a little bit about the immersive live part.
So I can't tell you too much about the performance,
but the, but the, but,
but it does, it does involve a little bit of puppetry
as well as a story of plastic,
where it's come from, the idea,
and as well as where it lands in our future.
Okay, I'm here with Steve Abrams
and Steve is gonna show us a time machine,
a plastic time machine.
This is magic.
So what happens here?
You put the plastic in the time machine.
Put it right in here.
Go down here and you put the dates in of a future date.
What are you putting in?
I'm just putting in a random date.
The date that I will be very happy in the future.
And so this actually transforms the plastic
into what it's gonna be in the future.
Let's take a look at that.
And look what we have here.
It's the same plastic.
It's not biodegradable, is it?
Plastic has too long of a shelf life.
So come down to the plastic store.
It's in the old toy district down here downtown.
I'm Pat Patterson with the best of Los Angeles.
Talk to you soon.
