(Part-11) 1967 Shelby GT500 Project BETSY Mustang Fastback - Fixing SHADY SHOP work - Replica Build

So as you can see behind me, there's a lot of work that I need to catch up on. And this episode is probably going to take, I don't know, three, four, five days, maybe even two weeks. Who knows? But my goal is to put her on the ground and hopefully get her started. And we're going to start right now. And the first thing is going to be to install, finish installing the trunk release, electronic trunk release. I installed the latch, so now I got to run this correctly. And then after this is run and secure, I'm going to start installing the panels because I don't need to get behind there anymore. I'm also going to kind of fine tune the carpet because it's not really perfectly set. I'm going to prep this area, get all this rust out, paint this spot, install the windshield because I was having a little bit of a hard time getting it into the little grooves here. So we'll finish that up. And then I'm going to finalize the dash. We're going to install everything on the dash here. Maybe install the seats. Install the doors. And then I'm going to test fit the engine in. And then remove these engine mounts because I don't need these. These two. And we're going to install new engine mounts that I bought that are adjustable and I can adjust the engine forward or back. And then we're going to remove the rack and pinion, cut off the brackets and see how much down this needs to go in order to fit properly. So guys, we have a lot of work ahead of us. Please be patient. Enjoy the video. And let's get started. So the interior is pretty much 100% complete. I got the back seats done, roll bar installed, all the panels installed. This took probably, I don't know, I think almost three days, four days. Yeah, about three days to install all those panels. I had to find all the trim pieces, screws, everything. Things were not lining up. So that took, that was a little headache. The seats were installed. Cleaned them up. Everything is good on here. Installed the fire extinguisher. Installed the NOS button. And then we got the Shelby steering wheel installed. Well, it's not installed. It's just on here because I still want to actually remove the steering column and actually paint it because it's kind of a little messy. And the instrument cluster is not connected yet because I still have to find the speedometer cable that connects to the transmission. This car did not have one, surprisingly, not. This aluminum Shelby dash, you can buy this from Kentucky Mustang, I got the link down in the description. And I picked up all of the screws for the interior from them as well. Giving them a shout out for helping out. Also installed electronic trunk release. So that way, it's not a cable, it's electronic, so it's not going to work unless the battery is connected. So this releases the trunk and it's going to pop open and that's going to be really convenient and you don't need a key to open it. And underneath the dash, installed some insulation foam with foil. Also deleted the heater box as well. On these cars, they always upgrade them, plus it was cracked. So there's that. All right, so here's what we're going to do right now, I'm going to remove these stock engine mounts and we're going to install these adjustable engine mounts. And then I'm going to put the engine in and see how the engine sits because I want to see how much down the rack and pinion needs to go. And also I need to see how much room I have for this Mickey Mouse steering shaft. So yeah, I'm going to have to figure out what to do with this because the angle is a little bit too stiff. All right guys, here we go. And this is how basically it should be sitting. And I did unbolt the rack and pinion and I dropped it down maybe about two inches or so and that's our gap right there. I dropped it down to where I think it should be without touching the engine. And obviously you want to give it some space, you know, when the engine is actually bouncing or whatever, revving. So and half an inch right there between the oil pan and the rack and pinion, that would be perfect. I'm going to cut this bracket and weld it one inch lower, that way I don't have to make any brackets and it's already made and it's going to be pretty much just as strong. One inch lower is not going to make any difference. And plus I'm going to have to do something with this Mickey Mouse work because it's welded, it's not sliding, so and I need it to be shorter. I mean, I can maybe, I don't think it slides even, no, I don't think it slides. Basically when I'm done with the rack and pinion, I'll see what size I need and I'm going to look up online, see if they have anything that's kind of universal. See if I can use that, something like that, because this Mickey Mouse work is not, not for me. Pull the engine out again and start working on the bracket here. And then once that's done, mount the rack and pinion. That's going to be secure. And I'm going to start cleaning the belly, start cleaning the engine bay, start cleaning the engine. I'm going to spray the engine as well and start spraying the whole thing and make it all nice, clean and pretty. All right, let's continue. It actually turned out pretty good. This is a dupli-color header, high temperature paint. And I got to say, it turned out very, very nice for a Mickey Mouse paint job. Now, obviously, if you want to do this properly, you want to remove as much, as many things as possible, like headers, spark plugs, all the brackets and all that stuff. But since I really, to get to places like this, you got to remove all of that, clean it up, paint it and it's just, it's not worth it. This engine is kind of original from 1993, 5.0, so who knows how long it's going to last. Well, anyways, painted the back here, the housing, transmission housing. I'll probably clean up and paint the transmission, but I'm not going to do the aluminum. I'm probably going to do maybe black or gray and it's going to look pretty good underneath the car. This is done, ready to go into the Mustang, but we still got to clean the belly, clean the engine and paint all that. All right. All right, guys, and sadly, I wasn't able to finish her in this episode. That was my goal. I wanted to do, to get that done. Things were not going as planned, interior panels were not fitting, things were missing stuff I couldn't find. Just a lot of stuff was kind of a little bit against me, but it is what it is. This is what we have now. The engine is in, re-welded the brackets on the bottom and sitting on the engine mounts and I can move it forward or back if I need to, but there's plenty of room and it's all nice and good. The engine is no longer sitting on the rack and pinion. Now, Matthew helped me install the doors. The doors are on, interior is finished, and a cool little trick to put on the doors without damaging the doors or the body is to use this kind of edge protector. So I cut one piece, two piece, two pieces on the bottom, so it's sitting on the rubber pieces when you're installing the doors. But man, these doors are heavy. I forgot how heavy these doors are, probably, I don't know, I want to say maybe 90 pounds, 90, close to 100 pounds. So yeah, I thought it was going to be a lot lighter. And I also wanted to paint the whole belly, but I ended up painting just the engine compartment around this area right here, so I can put the engine in and not worry about it. And then when I install the radiator support, then I'll be able to mask off, cover the engine, whatever, and then paint the top section here, radiator support, top section here, and then underneath the cowl right there. So basically I got everything painted that's kind of hard to reach, and then the belly, obviously there's nothing in the way right now, so I can do the belly on the next episode as well.
