Would you name your child any of these??? We discuss whether baby names affect identity and what we think will be the trends for the future, check etttt!
Hey guys, welcome to OTGW, and for lack of a better word, talk.
Yeah, that's what we're going to name this for right now until...
forever, or until you guys give us a better suggestion.
If you guys are joining us for the first time, these two lovely ladies are...
Fel!
Mia!
Fel is short for fell down hard. That's her actual name.
Orfeo!
That's going to be a new name!
And that's important. I'm Dan, by the way, because today we're going to be talking about names.
What's in a name?
What's the rest of that phrase?
What's in a name?
That sounds so sweet. Isn't it Eleanor Roosevelt?
Oh, I don't know, man. You just got like super poetic.
What?
It is a phrase!
You think I'm smarter than I actually am.
So, guys, we all know that celebrities name their babies some of the weirdest names possible, right?
Like Blue Ivy, Northwest.
So we'll tell you guys about a recent trend which people have done an actual study on.
They're saying that since 1950, more and more kids are becoming less named after common names,
like George, David, Michael, but now they're getting...
The vanilla names.
Yeah, I don't think they're vanilla, and I want to know what you guys think,
but yes, they're less named Michael and David and Dan,
and more named strange names like the crazy celebrity names.
Like Apple!
Like Apple, yeah.
Or like a parent will take a name and just completely spell it differently.
So the study is saying that because millennials who are doing these, they want to stand out.
Do you guys agree with that?
Why do you think people are doing this?
Well, it's definitely linked to identity, because you know a person as their name, obviously.
And then I guess the more colorful and vibrant that name is, it kind of paints a picture of that person.
But then when you're a baby, how would you know how your baby's personality is going to be?
That's a good point.
I think it's because they want to stand out,
because right now millennials are taught to be different from one another.
You have to find out about your individuality.
You have to stand out from the crowd, and that's how you get ahead in society or whatever.
So I think that plays a big part into naming their kids, and they want their kids to stand out.
In Chinese naming practices, it's more individualistic, but I feel like it's more poetic.
No one has the same name, but it's not like it's random.
It's full of meaning as well.
Exactly.
Because a lot of these, to me, they're just doing something arbitrarily,
like spelling Jackson with an X, because no one's done it before.
You know what I mean?
So to me, when you start paying attention to pure individualism,
you lose track of reasons and traditions why they were put.
So I want to ask you guys, what would you name your children?
Do you want something individualistic but traditional, or do you want to just go all tradition?
I think I'm a pretty conservative person.
I would stick with traditional names, but I would do something different,
maybe like a different spelling. I'm open to that.
Or using two first names, that line.
So Mia Venus Flattrap?
Bubble slash tea.
I just keep going back to that.
You really like Jasmine Milk Tea?
Jasmine Milk Tea.
Oh, that's it.
That's funny, because I would want to name my child, if they were a girl, Tia, right?
But I don't know how to spell it, like T-E-A or T-I-A.
And then so Jasmine Tea, if it was Tia.
No one would pronounce it as Tia.
They'll just go Tea.
Mind and name, at first you mispronounce it.
Like after you tell people.
How would your child feel though, when they go to Starbucks?
You want kind of a normal name, but something unique.
But you're not going to go super crazy.
Not super crazy and not super mainstream.
For me, I associate names with people I know in real life.
So for example, if I don't like a David.
Yeah, you will never be able to.
Because in your mind, it's like ingrained that that's a bad name.
Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
So if I like a certain name.
Bad memories.
Exactly, and I don't.
Okay, I would never name my son LeBron, because I don't like LeBron James.
But I would name him Stephen, for Stephen Perry.
So we've already seen like, okay, Apple, right?
Apple is the kid of Coldplay's Coldplay.
Gwyneth Paltrow.
Pineapple!
Oh, no!
Pineapple.
And then the third one would be Penn.
Actually, there was someone named Penn the Magician.
Penn the Magician's son's name is actually Moxie Crime Fighter.
Or Moxie Crime Something.
That's his real name.
So I'll give that one to you guys.
I'm not going to test you on that one.
That's like meta world peace.
That's like meta world peace, but he just did that to himself.
Or like Chad Johnson in NFL changed his name officially to Chad Ochocinco.
85.
Because his number was 85.
Okay, that's not his real name.
You thought that was his real name?
I didn't know.
You thought his last name was Ochocinco?
What it is, is I give you guys two names, and one of them is definitely real.
Okay.
So you both have to decide and tell me.
So someone exists with this name.
Correct, and I'm going to give you two.
All right.
So the first one is, first name is Ode Mountain.
So O-D-E, like ode to something.
Versus the name S space Cassiopeia.
Is that actually a word?
Cassiopeia is a name of a constellation, right?
Or a star.
S Cassiopeia is named after the yellow super giant star,
and is the daughter of Cold Place drummer Will Champion and his wife Marianne.
Because they wanted something symbolic.
So like a burning star.
I think that's a viable explanation.
When you said Cold Play.
Ode to Joy?
Ode is actually not that strange.
Ode?
It's not even Ode, it's just Ode.
Like I owed you something.
Ode Mountain is just so weird.
I'll go with S.
No!
But what's Ode Mountain?
Ode Mountain is actually the son of Hunger Games star Jenna Malone.
So the entire kid's name is Ode Mountain De Lorenzo Malone.
Oh my gosh.
Maybe it was like a thing where they were conceived on the mountain.
Maybe he was conceived on the mountain.
Like Brooklyn.
Yeah.
So if you were on an airplane bathroom,
you conceived an airplane bathroom.
Maybe like a lavatory.
Or like no smoking.
Or even like the vessel ship.
Here's the next one.
Jermajesty or The One.
I've heard of Jermajesty.
Have you?
Who's named Jermajesty?
I think it's an athlete.
Jermajesty.
J-E-R-M-A-J-E-S-T-Y or The One.
No.
You Da One!
No.
I think that's a very viable name.
What a joke.
Stop trying to make me think!
No, I'm pretty sure that it's Jermajesty.
Okay.
It is Jermajesty.
Yeah, where did I hear that from?
It's Michael Jackson's brother, Jermaine Jackson,
who was part of the Jackson family.
There you go!
Maybe they pronounce it differently.
The only other way it could be pronounced is Your Majesty,
because the J would be like Y.
Your Majesty.
Oh my god, that would be Your Majesty!
What if...
Oh my god, that's brilliant.
Pilot and Spector versus Crack.
How do you spell that?
Good question!
Spell with a K.
K-R-A-K.
Crack.
Pilot and Spector...
Wait, are they the actual names or is it nicknames?
No, these are all real birth certificate names!
That's why I'm like...
And their passports and IDs and everything.
They might be called something different in real life as a nickname,
but these are real names.
Okay.
Alright.
Crack, spelled with a K,
is named after the famous volcano Krakatoa,
which erupted in 1883 in Indonesia,
and it was one of the deadliest eruptions in history,
killing over 40,000 people.
And who named it was,
may or may not be producer extraordinaire Just Blaze,
because he wanted the kids to blow up like he did.
The second one, Pilot and Spector,
may or may not be the name of the son of actor Jason Lee,
he was in Mallrats, or My Name is Earl.
He's that guy.
He named his son that because he heard an obscure line from a band,
and the line went,
he's simple, he's dumb, he's a pilot,
and he said the line blew his mind.
So he's like, I want my kid to be named Pilot.
But it doesn't explain the Inspector part.
I'm just gonna go with Pilot and Spector
because it's too damn weird, man!
Okay, what about you, Mia?
I'll go with Crack.
It's Pilot and Spector.
Out of his mind, okay?
Sorry.
Not out of his mind, I'm just, you know.
No, it's like legit.
The name Ocean, spelled like the ocean,
may or may not be the name of the son of actor Forrest Whitaker.
And he named his son Ocean because he wanted him to be vast and expansive,
like the ocean.
Pigasaur may or may not be the name of child star Macaulay Culkin's son,
named after his favorite Pokemon and childhood creature.
Dude!
Wait, Macaulay Culkin has a son?
Dude's like 30-something.
With who, Mila Kunis?
Anyways, which one do you think?
I like Ocean.
Yeah, I would take Ocean.
Okay.
It's actually not that weird of a name.
Final answer?
I just didn't even know he had a son, so no.
Yeah, it's Ocean.
Ay, baby!
The name Audio Science, spelled audio, spelled science.
Actual name or too legit, one word, t-o-o-l-e-g-i-t, too legit, one word.
And then is his last name too quick?
Or Audio Science.
This is madness.
This is what I'm talking about.
If the Audio Science is real, why can't I name my kid, like, Microphone?
Reveal.
Audio Science.
No!
Anyways, celebrities are kind of crazy, and we learn that anything goes.
And I'm kind of afraid that one day we will have names like Voice Record.
Yeah, I really didn't know to that extent.
Well, the door's been opened.
Or like SD Card.
You can name your kid SD Card.
In America, you can name your kid anything, and I'm kind of afraid that eventually you will have kids being like,
Dude, I hate my name.
So anyways, guys, let us know if you know any crazy names that we left off.
Let us know why you think people continue, and will they keep naming their kids weirder and weirder names?
Or do you have a weird name?
Do you actually have a...
How do you feel about it?
Not a nickname, a real weird name.
Yeah.
Thanks again for watching, guys!
See you later!
Bye!
Edit down.
Do you see my booger just now?
No, but you're, like, up in there.
Like, half your finger's up in there.
Actually, you know, I could shove my pinky finger...
All the way up?
So she posed this question earlier, like, if you...
Dan, what are you doing?
I'm seeing how far my finger is.
Do you think when you're young and you pick your nose too much that, like, your nostrils will expand?
I don't think so.
Oh, Dan!
