A restaurant under the ocean but that's not in the United States or Dubai it is located in a remote area
A village named Bali in Norway this structure looks like a periscope that is half underwater
and half above it this works as a restaurant as well as a marine research center the food served in
the restaurant will be shown at the end of the video Now let's look at the architecture case study
A Norway architecture firm named Snohetta designed this underwater restaurant
Construction was completed in 2019 The restaurant's area is 495 square meters which is 5300
Why are there many popular beachside tourist spots in Norway then why is this
restaurant built in a village Let's find out the answer to this question The idea of this
An underwater restaurant where visitors can enjoy the sea view with marine organisms
the sea waves from the north and south meeting in this Bali village and marine species
Flourish in this brackish and salty water this kind of water is naturally available in this location
So this location was chosen for the under restaurant which was constructed in a
barge 20 meters away from the site there is a hollow concrete tube which is immersed
Half in water this is the basic concept of the structure The main problem in the structural
design is the water pressure and waves This location is known for its intense weather conditions
Typically changing from calm to stormy several times a day the structure should be 16.5
feet below ground level in seawater permanently to withstand all of this the thickness of the
The outer wall is given 1.5 feet then the walls are slightly curved with the glass at the front of the
The structure is also fixed here in the barge after the construction was completed in the barge
It is moved to the site with the help of tugboats and cranes Now let's see how the structure
is installed on the site The glass windows were installed before the submersion of the structure
It is placed in the water and starts to float so the structure is filled with water to submerge it
after the submersion the structure is bolted to the seabed using 18 bolts and this structure is
Completely watertight and weatherproof the dimensions of the under restaurant are 140 feet in
The area is 5300 square feet 38 feet wide and long There are three levels in this
restaurant A large oak staircase connects these three levels on the first level entrance and
The cloakroom is located here where visitors will keep their bags and coats and then move
inside the restaurant The next level is a champagne bar where both the land and sea can be seen
Alcoholic drinks are served here A large vertical window is placed here Daylight will enter
through this window The next level is the main part of this structure the restaurant area
Approximately 60 to 70 people can sit and eat in this space the main focal point of the whole
The restaurant has a panoramic glass window The dimensions of this glass window are 36 feet
by 10 feet This glass window is placed in such a way that it can be seen from all the levels
In the restaurant visitors can enjoy the view of the sea and marine life through this panoramic
glass window Snohetta also planned outside the restaurant to attract the sea life to come near
e restaurant the plan of the snohetta is that the concrete tube should work as an artificial
rock so the outer structure is left rough and exposed by doing this algae kelp and other
Green organisms will latch on and start to live on it and when we see these pictures we can know
that the building is completely integrated into the surrounding nature the green living organisms
Above the structure the water is cleansed which will attract more sea organisms nearby
Snohetta placed small rocks and pebbles around the structure
These rocks will help sea life breed the lighting system under the glass minimizes reflections
from the glass window and maximizes the sea view outside the glass window 380 small
LED lamps are fixed in the dining area and these pointed lights provide a serene experience
inside The dining room uses muted lighting at night for visitors to enjoy the sea view
The color of the sea water will change from season to season it will be sapphire blue in the
winter season and emerald green in the summer season The lighting system inside the under can be
The interior lighting of the under structure is adjusted to the outer environment with a gradient type
where the gradient light is a lighter shade in the upper levels and a darker shade in the lower levels
Levels below artificial lightings are used outside the restaurants to attract sea life
During the night times the outer shell of the building is made of concrete as we have already
It is visible that it is left exposed on the rough acrylic glass used for the panoramic window in
front of the building and in the interior terrazzo flooring used in the main dining room deep blue and
Green colored acoustic panels are used for the walls these materials are inspired by the sea bed
Warm pink and orange stones are used in the champagne bar inspired by shells and sand from
the seabed rough oak wooden finished materials are used in the entrance and the staircase
Which connects all the levels is made from oak wood throughout when we look at the materials
the one under the upper level has wooden finished materials and the lower level has textile
Textile cladding gives a textile texture feel and these materials provide
a pleasant ambience for visitors all furniture in the under-restaurant
Handcrafted by skilled local carpenters charred oak wood tables are used for dining
and ceramics are made from sand collected from the seabed It is not an aquarium you can
Observe the sea life without disturbing them while eating in a restaurant says the lead
architect During the afternoon it is used as a marine research center for those who visited
The restaurant says that the under should be experienced when the weather is very intense
Now let's see the food served in the restaurant which recommends to visitors to experience
the menu completely visitors should spend three to four hours inside the restaurant
Seafoods are served in the restaurant and everything is locally sourced These are
all the food that are served in the under restaurant to sit inside a safe structure under the ocean
And eating when the weather is very intense will definitely give an unforgettable experience
