The video shows the assembly of the brand new - when posted (11/2020) - kit of the special Phantom II F-4EJ Kai edition "Phantom Forever 2020". Zoukei Mura provided me with the preproduction sprues in absolutely brilliant quality. It's some kind of "unboxing" with animated parts coming together to a beautiful model of the special edition.


The F-4EJ was a modification of the USAF F-4E to fit the JASDF's needs, removing the ground attack function and aerial refueling. A data link was added to make the aircraft an interceptor. The "Kai" variation is a further modification to improve and modernize the F-4EJ. The modifications included the radar, FCS (fire-control system) modernization, navigation, communication system improvement, missile modernization, and bombing system improvement. As the JASDF's F-4 were updated to the F-15J and F-35A, fleets were reorganized, and the F-4EJ Kai aged, the number of F-4EJ Kai gradually decreased. By 2019, the 301st Tactical Figther Squadron of the 7th Air Wing based at Hyakuri Air Base in Ibaraki Prefecture was the only squadron equipped with F-4EJ Kai. In 2020, the squadron flew F-4EJ Kai aircraft with the special "Phantom Forever 2020" retirement markings for the last time, commemorating the end of the aircraft's long service...
