Hey guys, welcome back to our channel.
Today is part two of a three-part series
of us redoing our basement area.
This is actually something that we have already done
when we first moved into this house about four years ago,
but we just wanted to give it a little bit of an update.
Over the last four years,
we've had multiple family members
temporarily living with us in the basement,
so we haven't really used this area very much in our house.
And now that it's just us here,
we really wanted to give this a whole new fresh look.
The first thing I'm doing here
is using some liquid sandpaper on the fridge.
I am going to be painting this fridge,
and so I wanted to eliminate any of the shine
so that the paint would adhere to it a little bit better.
This fridge was left here when we moved in.
It was the fridge that was upstairs,
and then when we did all of our remodels
and we made a little kitchenette area downstairs,
we moved the fridge downstairs.
So it still works perfectly fine,
but I did want it to have a little bit of a different look.
I'm using a gold spray paint for the handles,
and I'll be using the same spray paint
for all of the hardware on the cabinets.
I chose just a black color from Benjamin Moore.
I don't know if there is a specific name for it,
but if I do find a different name
than just like their pure black,
then I will have it linked below.
But this took three coats of paint,
and I am going to be using the same paint
to do the entire cabinet as well.
I did buy a gallon
because I knew I was going to be painting a lot,
and honestly, you can hardly even tell I used it.
This paint definitely goes a long way.
One thing that I did not do
that I think I will do
is I want to do a clear coat on the fridge
just so that I can wipe it down a little bit easier.
I will be getting a polycrylic mat.
That's the same stuff that I use
on my dressers in our bedroom,
and it has really held up really nicely.
I'm sure I'll be getting questions about this cabinet,
the countertop, and the flooring.
So I just want to answer those here.
None of this was here when we moved in.
It was just plain room.
There was pink carpet, yellow walls.
And so when we first moved in,
we ripped up part of the carpet,
and we laid down some vinyl,
and it feels exactly like tile.
This is just right directly on some cement.
I will try to find a link,
but we did get this flooring at Lowe's,
and if I can remember right,
it was a dollar or less a square foot.
The cabinets were purchased from Lowe's,
and they were just like the cheapest kinds you can buy.
We bought three different pieces
and then pieced them together,
and then the countertop was also from Lowe's.
Any of these decor pieces,
I will try to have linked
or at least tell you where they are from
in the description box below.
But as far as these shelves go,
all we did was we ran our old shelves through a planer,
which sanded off the old stain,
and then we restained them to match the beam
and all of the other wood that's in this room.
Thomas built us a little table that sits behind our couch,
and it looks into our living room.
I wanted to include that into this video
just because this was a little bit short.
So this technically kind of sits in the kitchen area,
and we have our little barstools up underneath it.
But I wanted to give you an up-close look
at what kind of wood we use for the top of this table.
I'm working on the back of the legs right now.
Originally, I was just gonna do four legs
and attach them together.
I wanted to make the design a little bit different,
so the back legs are gonna be a little bit shorter,
and the front legs are gonna be wider
so we can fit all of the stools underneath it.
I'm using four-by-fours for the legs,
and I'm gonna do them about 39 inches apart,
and then the front ones are gonna be 56 inches apart.
I'm gonna attach the two-by-fours
to the four-by-fours with these lag screws,
so I'll pre-drill a hole with my drill bit
and then use the lag screws and sink them in.
I think these are about five inches.
I like using lag bolts because it's a lot stronger
than just shooting a couple screws into it
or even using pocket holes.
I like pocket holes for some parts of this,
but not for the main structure part.
When you do your pocket holes, if you have this tool,
you wanna make sure that when you drill your hole,
your screw, so I'm gonna use two-and-a-half-inch screws
because I want majority of the screw in the four-by-four,
and then I want it to grab just below the top of it
or just before the top of it,
so you wanna make sure your screw doesn't go through here,
so I would test a few, like you'll have the little markings
on the side of it of the inches.
Test it a few times before you actually start drilling.
You don't wanna puncture the top of the table.
For the edges, I'm going to use a two-by-three,
and I ran it through my planer
to make it a little bit thinner,
so I probably took maybe a sixteenth of an inch off of it,
and it just made it really smooth.
If you have a planer,
you don't have to have it for this project.
If you have long enough pinnails,
you could do it with just the original two-by-three,
but I like the sharp edge look,
and then I'll kind of dull it down a little bit,
but it looks more like a manufactured look
than if you were to just throw
a regular two-by-three on there, so.
I'm gonna hit it with a 220 sandpaper
just to smooth it out before I stain it,
get rid of any of the slivers
or any of the little dinks that are on there.
For the base of the legs, we are just using a white paint,
and this is something we also already had on hand
from doing the living room.
We've had a popcorn machine down here for years.
We've actually had one for over six years.
We bought it used, and it's lasted us for a long, long time,
but I decided to sell that one,
and we bought a black and gold one
to match this basement area.
Okay, guys, well, that's everything for this video.
Thank you so much for watching.

make sure that you do that so you don't miss out
on part three of our downstairs makeover.
Thanks again for watching,
and we'll see you guys in the next video.
