Here's a fast method to find the center of boards and other objects without using a tape measure or figuring math! In 2 minutes you'll learn how to use a speed square or combination square (VERY common and inexpensive shop tools) to find centers. DirtFarmer Jay shows you one of the methods he uses in his shop!
Hey, Dirt Farmer Jay here from DirtFarmerJay.com.
If I could give you a way that'd show you how to get the halfway point on a board without
using math, would you be interested?
I thought so.
Hey, join me in the shop and let's get rolling.
All right, we've all been there where we've had a board or some object to measure the
width of.
And sure, you can take a tape measure and you can measure the width, and here we've
got five and a half, and you can do the math, or I've even given you the diagonal trick
in another video where you can cut it in half right here.
But there's even a faster method that you can use that doesn't take a lot of tools.
It can either use a speed square type of device or a combination type of square, and then
the only other thing you need is a pencil, and we can find the precise center of this
within seconds.
Here's how it works.
First thing we need to know is we need to find a starting point for our diagonal, and
you'll see where that diagonal comes in a moment.
So I'm just going to draw a line across this board right here, and as you can see, that
gives us the same reference point on the left and right side of the board.
So when I do that, all's I need to do is using a speed square, and I'm using a large one,
but a small one works just as well.
All's I need to do is draw a line over here, I'm going to flip, use the same reference
point right there, and I'm going to draw another diagonal.
When I do that, that intersection point there is precisely one half of the way in from both
sides.
Works beautifully.
Now if you don't have one of these speed squares, and instead you're a combo square person,
you can do the same thing.
You would start with the reference point right here, left and right, and then you would simply
use your 45 degree reference along the combo square, and right here, put a line here, flip,
go to the other side, put this in, draw the line, there's your same point again right
there.
As you can see, both areas here, same result, different tool, no math.
The board knows what size it is, and so does the tools.
You don't have to know.
Hey, if you like the video, why don't you like it?
And better yet, why don't you subscribe?
