In today’s video, we are visiting the house of Kouzou Watanabe. Born into a samurai family, Kouzou learned ship building in the U.K before returning to Japan in the 1870s to work as a bureaucrat, shipbuilder and industrialist before retiring here with his wife at the age of 49.

This two-story Meiji period house features an exquisite tea room completed in the 16th century style and a 200-year-old chest of drawers which belonged to Kouzou’s ancestor; A Mori princess. Kouzou passed away in 1939 at the age of 97.

Open every day except Wednesday, admission is free and parking, while limited, is available.
