It took nearly a year to complete full renovation of this old Kyoto townhouse (Kyo-machiya) in the northern part of Kyoto City. My idea was to preserve and restore it's traditional features and conventional architecture as much as possible while bringing in living comfort and safety with structural re-enforcement, modern fittings and facilities. A number of handmade Akari lamps are installed.

The concept of Wabi Sabi (侘び寂び) is adopted in the design of a small Japanese garden. There is enough room to put a pair of Japanese cushion seats and a small tea table on the wooden deck in front of the garden to enjoy tea under the eaves. There is also an empty space on the right side of the garden where a Japanese style bathtub can be installed for open-air bath in the summer.
